Punt gun or what?
Hi, Hello everyone, I have just joined the forum.
Hope someone can help. A friend has asked me to rebuild this gun for display only( though it will have a working mechanism). Firstly I have no idea what it would have looked like originally. I restore Antiques Automata etc. At first sight I thought it is a punt gun. But cleaning it up it revealed a pattern around the nozzle hope thats what you call it. length of Barrel 2 meters or 78.5 inches. Thank you in advance for any information. Probably a wall gun.
The embellishment is interesting.

Hey FrankenMauser,,,
Hey FrankenMauser,,,
What do you mean by a "Wall Gun"? One that was mounted to be fired from a defensive wall? Or one that was just a decorative piece to show on a wall? Just curious as I don't believe I've ever heard the term before. Aarond .

A wall gun is a heavy piece meant to be propped on a wall to fire at besiegers.

I vote for punt gun used by market hunters back east to flock shoot resting waterfowl with large charges of birdshot. There are likely far more retired punt guns than wall guns rusting around the country.

Thanks for all the input, I think l am hedging towards a wall gun or rampart gun. Waiting for a reply from The Royal Armoury. The gun was found in Essex, UK on a farm where a battle took place. But the battle was too early C.1016 for this to be used.

I'll go for the wall gun. With such caliber doesn't look like a punt one, remember punt guns were used mainly for waterfowling then its caliber must be more in line with shotgun ones.

Punt guns were big and heavy with bore size a 2 gauge or bigger. Somewhere between a shotgun and an artillery piece. They were so heavy they were mounted to the bow of a boat(punt)hence the name.

Impressive video. 2 meter barrel is a bit much to handle.
Hey Klassy, if your decide to shoot it I’ll pay for the exclusive video rights from loading to ER admittance.

I weighed the barrel just under 35 pounds about 11 shotgun barrels thats why they rested them on a wall or some bodies shoulder. and with the butt would have been over 7 foot long. Thanks again everyone with your help.
