Also try a copper remover solvent like Shooters Choice.

I have been a .17 Rem shooter for over 30 years. They are VERY unforgiving when it comes to copper fouling. You MUST clean the barrel with a good powder solvent...and when it is clean, go in with a copper solvent and get the copper out. Due to the small bore, they foul up fast.

They are very accurate, drive bullets @ 4000+ FPS and are good for prairie dogs to coyotes.

If going out to do a bunch of shooting, you must take cleaning gear along.
After cleaning, running some JB Bore cleaner thru about 100 passes may help lap the bore in to copper foul less.

Enjoy...it is a fun caliber !

How does the bore look?

I have been shooting a .17 wildcat for 8 years, and one thing that concerns me is the lands on .17's are very shallow. Like .0002 or something tiny. That's why they're sensitive to copper or powder fouling. It doesn't take much to turn it into a smoothbore.

That said, if it is cleaned too agressively, I would think it would be easy to wear down the lands, so it becomes a permanent smoothbore.

So do the lands look OK? Can you see distinct rifling?

I would hate to think the seller sold it because the bore was shot out, but I suppose that is one possibility.

(With regards to cleaning a .17, I recommend a foaming bore cleaner. No scrubbing, and they're real good at removing copper.)

Sounds good! If you're getting good groups on a windy day, wait 'till you try it on a still day.

According to Hodgdon's website, you are still OVER the max for Varget with a 30gr. Berger. They show starting load of 20gr Varget, max of 22.5. You're at 23. No wonder you're getting pressure signs.

You can go up to 24.5 gr. Varget for a 25 gr. bullet, but when you go to a 30gr. bullet, you have to back off the powder charge. As your bullet gets heavier, the powder charge has to come down. Heavier bullet has more inertia, and often more friction in the bore, so it can't take as big a powder charge as a lighter bullet can. The profile of the bullet can affect how much powder charge, too. More "bearing surface" means more friction, means less powder.

At any rate, you're over the max. Go to Hodgdon.com for more details.

According to barrel makers Lilja and Shilen, the 9 twist is good for 30gr and up. The 25gr will shoot but as the barrel quickly fouls with them, you only get a few shots before they keyhole.

Where did you get the load data for 23.5gr Varget?
What OAL are you using?

Great caliber. Also, make sure you trim religously. IT is very unforgiving of overlength cases.

Chambers are different for every gun, what works in one might not work in another, even if it was built 5 minutes after the first one. You need to start low and work up, not start high and work down. The small calibers build pressure really fast and are finicky.

Rem 7.5 Primer
22.4 gr of Re-15
25 gr Berger Match bullet
2.150 OAL

That load has worked so well for me I haven't bothered trying anything else. It works quite well in both my custom bolt gun and AR. Both of which sport 1-10 pac-nor's.
