Come Covid or high water,,,

Come Covid or high water,,,
I'm going to the range tomorrow.

I'm maxed out on annual leave at my job,,,
So I need to take a day or two off.

I'm going with a purpose in mind,,,
I'm going to verify the sights on my venerable Mossberg 340KC.

The rifle has the S330 peep sight installed,,,
Along with the appropriate front sight to match the rear.

I inherited this rifle when Jackie, my best friend, passed away,,,
Her brother gave it and her 4" nickle plated S&W Model 34 to me.

Jackie was on her H.S. rifle team back in the early 70's,,,
Her father probably outfitted the Mossie for target competition.

She did well with the rifle I believe,,,
She showed me a pic of a book shelf that had a slew of trophies in it.

That was about 7 years ago and sadly I've only fired the rifle a few times,,,
I have decided to gift the rifle to the son of another friend of mine.

Todd knew Jackie as well as I did so it's going to a good home,,,
His son is now 7-8 years old and ready for his first .22 rifle.

His grandfather has a large wheat farm near them,,,
He'll always have a range and a shooting buddy.

Tonight I want to get the rifle all cleaned up and ready to go,,,
So tomorrow I'll spend a happy morning at the range,,,
I want to ensure the sights are "on" at 50 yards.

I recently did an ammo inventory of my .22 stash,,,
I have three full packs and a partial 325 round pack of Federal Auto Match.

It's decent plinking ammo but not my favorite by any means,,,
I do believe it will be adequate enough for a young boy,,,
And will give him a stash to have during this drought.

I'm also including a .22 revolver for him as well,,,
Several years ago I picked up a H&R Model 949 for a song.

It's tin-can accurate at a range of 25 yards,,,
And in very nice cosmetic condition.

I think they go together very well as a cased pair,,,
Both from the same general time period,,,
Both are Made in America.

So this will be my first range trip in a good long while,,,
Going early in the morning on a Wednesday,,,
I might have the range to myself.

Hopefully I won't need to dip into one of the full packs of ammo,,,
There's about 95 rounds in the open 325 pack,,,
Surely I can get it dialed in with that.

Wish me and my old eyes good luck.

Aarond

Sounds like an awesome and meaningful gift.

Happy shooting to you and to your friend's son.

Thanks jmhyer.

I'll probably only get to shoot with him on the day he gets the guns,,,
His family moved a considerable distance from where I live.

But I'll make a day trip later this year to pass it on to him,,,
And yes, that will be a Happy Shooting Day for us all.

Well, I took the rifle out dancing,,,

Well, I took the rifle out dancing,,,
And it apparently likes Federal Auto Match.

At 50 yards I was holding a nice 2-3" group right on the bullseye,,,
At 25 yards the group size shrunk considerably.

I know you're not going to be impressed by that group,,,
But remember I'm dang near 69 years old,,,
With all of the normal vision problems.

My main thing was to see if the sights needed adjusting,,,
They do seem to be spot on at 50 yards,,,
So I can gift it in good conscience.

The H&R 949 was minute of clay pigeon at 25 yards,,,
So I feel good about this as a gift as well.
