Questions regarding K-31 and competitions

I have a K-31 that I have an M1907 Leather sling attached to, until I get the real McCoy, it'll have to do for now. I can't do the loop sling method as the loop is too far up and I can only use the hasty/hasty hasty sling positions. I'd like to be able to shoot field positions and maybe competition sometime (I don't know how I'd do the latter though). I had saw somewhere that since the sling mounts on a K-31 are to the left, it creates a cant and the POI shifts. Is this true? I don't really understand how it would be, just wondering. Also, how could I start doing competitions with this rifle? I've always wanted to do a competition but don't know where to start. I was thinking of going to another appleseed and trying for rifleman with it as it shoots very well and then maybe doing competition later on, just a thought. I'd have to practice more, but I plan to. Thanks for any help you can provide.

it could create problems but you would really have to be wrenching on the sling, enough to flex the entire stock.

CMP shoots are great places to pick up good habits, tips, tricks.

Are there any prerequisites I have to complete first before I would do a Vintage Match? How would I find shoots near me?

no prereqs of any kind except that it has to be vintage military, you'll need 2 chargers, and you'll need to bring your own ammo as most shoots will only provide 30-06.

to find matches you would likely have to track down local outdoor ranges and see if they are offering any matches. CMP has a comp tracker but it's missing a LOT of matches.

How much ammo would be enough for the shoot? Are hand loads allowed?

CMP has two types of matches, A and B.
A course is 35 rounds fired from standing and prone positions.
B course is 55 rounds fired from standing, sitting and prone positions.
both courses allow 5 rounds to sight in.

depending on the range setting up the matches they may only do one type of match or alternate between the two from match to match. I've been allowed to bring handloads for oddball calibers that are hard to buy ammo for. I've been asked to chronograph it before the match to prove it was up to military specs as our range did have some people loading very light recoiling hand loads to aid in the rapid fire portions. I always clear it with the director before the match however just to make sure he's still ok with it.

You don't have to go to a match to do a match.
Do a postal match, using the results from an actual one.
Duplicate a course of fire at your own range, that was done at a real one, and compare it to known results.
Most clubs put their results on their web sites.

mine just posts to a newsletter once a month with results from all the different types of matches and they are pretty limited(how many showed up, who took home medals and their scores, if you didn't place, your score isn't posted.

then again my range is kindof poedunk and needs some young blood to modernize how they operate.

Per CMP Rules, vintage rifles that have the sling swivels on the side such as the Mosin and k-21 can be modified to place the swivels under the rifle like the Springfields & M1917s so the M1907 slings can be used. (The exception is the M1 Carbine, it has to use the "as issued" sling the way it was originally designed.)

As long as you can legally possess a firearm in this county, there is no other requirement to shot a CMP Vintage Rifle Match.
