Please Help Me! Where is the serial?

Hey all, I am new here but have been coming here for answers since 2010.

I have a big problem with a rifle that I want to purchase. I don't have any .22 rifles and a friend is giving one up for 40 bucks. There is just one problem, I am very particular when it comes to Law, and I want to identify the serial of this rifle but cant find one.

Here is all the information I know,,

It is a Glenfield MOD 60

The Marlin Firearms Co.
New Haven, Conn, USA
Cal .22LR

There is no serial number AT ALL on the outside of the gun but on the inside if you remove the barrel, on the trigger gaurd is a number...

MD10925 engraved on what holds the trigger....

Also, After removing the contents of the chamber there is a number inside the chamber area on the inside of the barrel......

10884 C1 Newton Newhaven Logo right under that number..

What does this all mean?

Are any of these numbers a serial number?

Does this rifle not have a serial number? Thank You!~

I can't tell you if any of those are a serial number, but I believe that rifle entered production prior to the Gun Control Act of 1968, and if so it may not have one.

If your C1 is really CI, it could mean it was manufactured in March 1965:

It would make sense if it were a 1965 rifle to not have a serial number. Serial number requirements didn't happen until 1968 like he said. I wouldn't sweat it. My son has a shotgun with no serial number. It's very old. It makes it extra cool if you ask me. Legal and no number from the man on it!

Cool if it has no serial!

Thanks for your reply. The C1 appears to be entirely seperate from the number next to it. I thought that coding only applied to serialized rifles, but I just "have to" second check that to see if it's CI.

I was even more curious about the year it was manufactured, it was then that I relized you need a portion of the serial to determine the year and of course I don't know the serial.

Ya, if its an older rifle there is not required to be a number on it. So its impossible to trace the original owner in anyway.

soooooooooooo

Sooo, I will buy this gun and I will not find out later that it is stolen because it has no serial?

I hope its not. I was thinking, why would a serial number of all things be located inside the gun all behind stuff like that!!!!

Do you think your friend stole the rifle? If so, don't buy it.

If not, have him write out a bill of sale, for one Marlin .22 rifle, no serial number and put it in with your important papers.

But if it does happen to be a stolen rifle, how would they confirm that with no serial number?!
