Stevens 311a Won't Cock

My Stevens 311, bought a couple months ago for cowboy action shooting, has been an enjoyable gun so far. But this week, it started exhibiting a new behavior: it won't cock the left barrel/front trigger when opened--or rather, it won't do it sometimes. I can't figure out a pattern to when it will and won't cock.

I'm not afraid to tear the gun down, and have a manual with instructions for dissassembly. If noone has any clarification about what might be the trouble, I'll just start in tearing it down and try to figure it out myself. Just thought I'd look for any advice for the journey, first.
