Sig Sauer 1911
I just purchased a Sig Sauer 1911 traditional tac ops. Wondering about magazines? Will any 8 round 1911 mag fit this gun or are magazines gun specific?

They "should" fit -- if SIG managed to follow specs. Since I don't think SIG makes their own magazines, it should be safe to assume that standard 1911 magazines will fit.

Any different "Government" or "Commander" sized 1911s will fit. Any decent quality mag should function just fine. Occasionally, a specific 1911 pistol may not like a particular 1911 mag. That's part of the joy of 1911 ownership. If the factory mags work fine, then just get some more of them.

If i can offer some experience with reguards to 1911 mags. Just buy Wilsons and be done.
I carried a 1911 as a duty gun for a while and taught at one of the big schools. I never had a problem with Wilson mags. Every other brand failed on the range at some point. Just my .02c |

As others have said, any 1911 magazine will work. I have used Kimber and Wilson mags in my SIG 1911. I prefer the Wilsons, primarily because of the polymer follower. I’ve noticed the SIG and Kimber magazine lips around the follower have started to bend outwards slightly, and it has sometimes been difficult to remove a loaded magazine. I suspect this will start to cause feeding problems one day, and then I will replace with Wilsons.

And, to prove the validity of what was posted earlier, I'd recommend you avoid Wilson mags.
Seriously, many, many people recommend them, but when I was sampling mags before deciding what to buy in quantity, the Wilson mag didn't lock the slide back when the others did, so it was scratched off the list first. Most "factory" 1911 mags are made by Metalform, Mec-Gar or Check-Mate, and one of those companies almost certainly make SIG's mags.

I run Check Mate mags in my SIG 1911's. Fantastic mags. I would never run a Wilson mag. They release the cartridge too early which defeats the controlled feed that the 1911 was designed around.

I've been running Wilsons for a while now. I've had great luck with them in a Springfield Range Officer.

And I had a brand new Wilson magazine lock up my Colt Combat Commander so tight the gunsmith had to clamp the slide in a vise and beat the receiver off with a plastic mallet. I run Check-Mate magazines, or Colt (which are made by either Check-Mate or maybe some from Metalform).

I’ve not had any problems with 8-rd mags from Sig, Colt, Wilson Combat, Shooting Star, or Checkmate in my Sig 1911. I haven’t tried my 7-rd gov’t surplus mags because I’d have to reload more often, but expect they would work as well.

Any 1911 mag will fit your pistol. The question is will they work reliably in your pistol?
In my experience, magazine compatibility is the major factor in 1911 reliability no matter the make of pistol. |

The Sig mags work in my Colt, so i surmise they work in any standard 1911.

For the most part all my 1911 mags work in all my 1911s. One of my two Wilson mags misbehaves. It will work sometimes and sometimes not in any of my 1911s (6).

Yes, standard mags are fine in my Sig 1911, although I agree with a previous poster---just buy Wilsons and call it a day! I bought 3 of their low profile 8-rounders for my carry rig and coudln't be happier. They are only slightly longer than 7-rounders and supremely reliable.

I was not implying that Wilson mags are bad. Bill Wilson designed his mags to fix feeding in 1911's that are not built "exactly right". Wilson mags tend to run well in all 1911's
I use mags that are designed close to Milspec. The reason being that the 1911 was designed as a controlled feed pistol. I'm from the school of thought that if a 1911 doesn't run right with Milspec mags then I want to know it and fix the gun rather than run mags that "mask" the problems with the gun. I fix my gun rather than hide the problem. My SIG 1911's have not needed any correcting. They run perfectly with Milspec mags. That's just me. YMMV.
