Full Nylon Jacket?

I was at the area Cabela's the other day and saw that they are selling Herter's aluminum-cased ammunition loaded with "TNJ" (total nylon jacketed) bullets.

http://www.cabelas.com/product/Shoot...3Bcat104372280

It's apparently manufactured by Blazer and sold under the Herter's name.
It does make sense to try to replace the expensive copper with nylon, and I've never had an issue with aluminum cased pistol fodder.

I see that is is a new release for 2012 and was wondering if anyone had any experience shooting this stuff yet?

$15 per 50 /.40 S+W was pretty tempting, but since I was on another mission I passed this time.

That's interesting and I'd be curious to see how they worked. Seems a bit pricey though, as I can get 100 round Value Packs of Federal Champion for $31 or so.

It's not a new idea. Federal did the same thing with their NyClad line of ammunition decades ago (NyClads have recently been reintroduced in a 125gr .38 Special loading). Basically, the nylon coating allowed the use of a dead-soft lead bullet without the barrel leading that would usually be inherent to a bullet of that type. If the ammo in question is really made by Blazer, it is unsurprising that they've chosen a nylon coating since Federal, Speer, and CCI are all owned by the same parent corporation: ATK.

I hope the nylon coating (Nyclad) spreads across numerous lines. I've always been a fan of the Nyclad line.

Ik...My point is that if it's meant as a cost saving feature as the OP first guesses than it isn't doing a very good job because it doesn't seem to be lowering the price by much, now does it ?

It sounds like concealed carry ammo to me... Being that each round comes in its own cover garment

I am aware of the old Federal NyClad ammo. I was specifically asking about the Herter's ammo.

Stopped by cabelas the other night. Bought 2 boxes of this stuff. Hoping to get out to the range later this week and test it out. I'll post a range report for all y'all when I get to the range.

A guy on Glock talk had a his pistol blow up firing Herters.

I'd google it before I'd shoot it.

I don't think it was the nylon coated. I think the International Select comes in the yellow box and the bullets are just copper jacketed and the cases are polymer coated steel, and I beleive there was a recall:

Herter's International Select Grade
9mm Luger 115gr. FMJ.

Tried it out over the weekend at the range. 2 boxes of 165gr TNJ 40S&W thru my G22. This stuff shot remarkably well and very accurately. Very clean thru the bore, at least for 100 rounds. Minimal barrel heat up lighter recoil compared to the 165gr FMJ American Eagle ammo that I shot after the TNJ as kind of a "control". The aluminum cases also came out of my gun looking much nicer than the brass cases that come out of it. It tends to dink and dent the case mouths on brass cases.

I don't know why the aluminum would come out looking nicer. The extractor in my P7M8 actually tore notches out of the Blazer Aluminum.

But as far as accuracy - I always thought the Nyclad was pretty accurate stuff. I think it has to do with the rifling getting a better "grip" on the bullet than copper jacketing, but I don't really know for sure. The two rounds that always shot accurately for me in my P7M8 were Nyclad 124 and Federal 135gr Hydra-Shok.

That surprised me too. However, I've shot a few boxes of Speer Lawman 165gr FMJ thru my G22 as well, and the brass from those cartridges doesn't look near as bad as the Federal American Eagle cases. So I'm thinking that them Federals are just a soft and cheaper brass quality.

As to the accuracy, that may be, it makes sense to me.
