The PASGT system is primarily designed to protect against shrapnel from mines and artillery exploding from beyond 15 meters. I say "protect against" because the armor isn't designed as a bullet resistant (often called "bullet proof") vest.

Having seen a demonstration where various calibers were fired at 7 yards, I can attest that the PAGST brain bucket will defeat some handgun rounds (45, 40, 357, 38, 9mm). suspect that the vest will also stop handgun rounds. However, the threat most infantrymen isn't going to be from (but doesn't preclude) somebody doing headshots at 7 yards with a handgun. Rather, it will be from rifle bullets and neither vest nor helmet are guarenteed to prevent injury. Now, there are vests which will defeat a .223, .308 or a 7.62x39mm round, but they're very bulky and very heavy. Call me cowardly, but I'm hiding behind a Bradley.

PASGT body armor is actually a STYLE of body armor, including the PASGT helmet. Most large body armor manufacturers make them, including manufactures from US, UK and Israel. Their protection level (whether designed for bullets or mines) are all up to what their clients want them to be. So, I believe there are all kinds of protection levels for PASGT body armor out there.

I shot one of the new style kevlar flak jackets with 45acp ball and hollowpoint, 9mm ball and hollowpoint, 50ae out a desert eagle, and 12 gauge slugs and buckshot. It stopped everything in the first panel except the 12 gauge slug that went through both front and rear panel without blinking.

It is true just checked mine with 9 mm.
Bullet stopped.
I am sure that vest saved at least 1000 lifes.

For additional protection, there are trauma plates that can be added.
