red dot sight on a pistol ?

Do any of you guys use a red dot on your hand guns ? With aging eyes and bi focals I am thinking red dot sight might be the answer. If you guys are using them is there a specific one you recommend ?

If it's just for range use, sure why not. Those FastFire 2's are slick. I have a Millett tube on my 22 CZ Kadet, it's almost like cheating.

Are you talking on a .22? If so, then yes. Are you talking centerfire? There arent many options for on an autoloader, unless you use something like an AimTech mount. I have a Reflex type sight on my Beretta Neos, and a BSA Green Dot on my Ruger 22/45 Threaded Barrel.

On the Ruger 22/45, a Reflex sight will work well. There is no magnification, but they are nice. They basically disappear when looking thru them, you just put the illuminated dot, or illuminated crosshair on target, and shoot. Very fast on a moving target, great for small game hunting. On the 45, I dont have any experience, but an AimTech mount for the 1911 style pistol, and a reflex sight should work well also.

I use an ultradot on my bullseye 45 (1911) and it works excellent. I've also used a fastfire 2 on a glock for carry for a bit. It works well as it doesn't get in the way but you go through batteries quickly since you have to leave it on all the time since you don't want to have to turn it on if you have to use it.

what kind of mounts do you guys use ? Drill and tap to put on a rail or something that bolts on ?

Drilling and tapping 1911 frames for optics is extremely common for "practical" competition. Slide-mounted miniature dot sights are not as popular in that application, but it's not uncommon. Check out the C-More Serendipity, which is a non-magnified red dot with integral frame mount.

I use a Burris Fastfire II on one of my S&W 41s and a tubular red dot on my Ruger 22 Standard with great success.

S&W just came out with a dot-sighted carry gun and it won't be the last.
Iron sights are headed for extinction.

Mako Universal Mount and Primary Arms Green Dot sight, the sight is no longer available, but just for your information these type of sights work great for bad eyes. I was having a hard time with my iron sights. This type of sight made shooting enjoyable again. Just put the dot and squeeze. Bought the sight on Amazon. Check out the pics in the link, shows the mount on other guns.

It can withstand 1000 G's of recoil so it has no problems riding on a slide with the appropriate mount.

I used to have a cheap BSA red dot on a Ruger MK III, 22/45. A bit big and top heavy, but man that thing would shoot. I just used the mount that came with the gun (already drilled and tapped).

I highly recomend it.

I've used a Burris fast fire on mk IIs & IIIs,.45 semis,.450 rifle and BFR .450 revolver.they work great.ultra dots on .22 & .45 autos are also great.

To the OP. If your 22/45 is one of the older ones that isnt drilled & tapped for a mount... there is a mount for the Burris FastFire that goes in the dovetail where the rear sight is. You need to remove the rear sight body. There are also mounts that clamp around the barrel. IF your 22/45 is factory Drilled & Tapped, then your all set.

I've got Trijicon RMR02s on a FNP45 Tactical and an FNS9, great sights, pricey but worth it.

A low mount reflex sight like the Doctor sight in the picture works well on 1911 style guns.
For general infomation the Trijicon RMR is to wide for a low mount installation on a 1911.

Rebs, I will point something out about the 22/45.

I had a tube red dot on my 6" 22/45 using a Weigand mount. To be frank it made the pistol very top heavy. If you want to avoid that, use the micro reflex type as in the pictures. At the time they weren't available, otherwise I would have gone that route.

I just got myself a 22/45 Lite and am thinking about getting a reflex style sight for it just to play around with. This might be a stupid question but do all of these work on the rails that came with my 22/45 or do certain sights work with certain rails? More specifically, the sights that were referenced above on the amazon link?

I've got a G19 with a Trijicon RMR mounted to it. Had the slide machined down and it co-witnesses with a set of suppressor sights. Saw a few posts up where someone said "spendy but worth it" <- +1 to that!
