well-used 870

i have been in the market for an 870 HD for a few months now.

one shop i frequent sells new for around $325. went in this weekend and he had an 870 with wood stock, front blade-rear notch sights, well used. asking $200.

i am thinking of going in with $150 and my marlin single-shot breakaway.

would this be worth it?

Define "well-used".
I have bought all my 870's used. The roughest one was 100 clams. It was a complete '55 Wingmaster with a fixed choke 28" barrel. It had very thin blue and chipped wood and a broken firing pin. I re-stocked it with some spares and replaced the firing pin. Took it out sporting-claying last week. Very cool!
My most expensive 870 was the first one I bought - 249 for a '94 Express with rifle-sights on a 20" barrel (like the one you're looking at) in excellent condition. I think I paid too much for that but it was my first so live and learn I guess.
The rest were between these prices - not including the bare receivers I've bought.
So...........in my opinion 200 for "well-used" is a bit high, but not by much, if it is as rough as I'm imagining. If "well-used" means broken-in and smoothed-up then it sounds like a good deal.
I bought all my 870's online too so this probably accounts for the lower prices and I have not added FFL fee's to those.

You can get a brand new Remington 870 on sale at places like Dick's Sporting Goods for $200.00

9mmMike, by well-used i mean the stock has some dings and the blue is pretty thin. i haven't had a chance to go over it completely yet, so i hope the firing pin isn't broken. sounds like i'll try to get him down on the price a little, really depends on the complete inspection.

willjr, i really try to avoid buying 'new' guns, to many safety features, like the locking safety on the new 870's :barf:

i'll post again when i (most likely) get it, hopefully with some photos

I'm with you on the used guns. I really like older 870's better than new ones.
My favorite is my '91 police trainer that was well-used. The outside looked better than the ol' '55 but the hammer was actually peened, badly, from usage.
It was a pre-Express though with no mag dimples and polished metal under blue.
This gun wears a 20" rifle-sighted barrel and is my primary everything gun. I am trying to phase it out of clay shooting and learn to shoot this "new" 28" plain-barreled '55 but it is a hard gun to put down for long.

i got the 870 today. $165+marlin.

gun has lots of extras:

- 20" barrel
- rifle sights
- +3 extension
- sling swivels
- screw in choke
- side saddle

wood stock is fairly marked up

took it apart, and when i removed the side saddle mounting plate:

WINGMASTER

sweeeet, i can't get the smile off my face!

heh, found out why some sucker had to get rid of it.

when i pulled out the trigger group, whats this? the right shell holder comes with. seems like some wecsog thought it was supposed to come out oops. to bad they had to pry it out with a screwdriver. it was bent up enought to prevent a shell from feeding from the magazine. little bending back into shape and she works great!

poor for them, good for me! plus now i have a very intimate relationship with this shotty, and i know exactly how it works (my first pump)!

Sounds terrific. It took me like four or five attempts before I could score my WM. That 870 sounds about perfect.

IMO regarding the 870, "well used" means nothing. I've owned an 870 Express for 10 years. Shot thousands of rounds through it and haven't cleaned it but maybe once and it has never failed, never broken. I feel like I can hit anything with it. I'm very comfortable with it after so many years, it feel like it's part of my body when I shoot it.

With a working life of around 250,000 rounds, well used just means smoothed up a little to 870 fans.

On the 870TB I use for clay games most of the time, the left shell latch fell out when the TG was removed. A 5 minute job restaking it for a good smith.

Now go shoot it.....

here it is after some modifications:

hehe, yea i spent an extra $25 and got the factory trigger pins, mag spring and cap (w swivel stud of course). i plan on leaving in in the stock configuration for a while.

at least when i need a mag extension and / or sidesaddle i will already have them!
