For those who shoot a lot of "clean powders" such as the Clays series or VV powders....
When you use them with cast or swaged lead bullets, do you see a real fouling and smoke difference from other "dirty" powders such as Bullseye, or do you find the lube and lead more of a factor in the overall dirtiness of the gun? I just traded my dad for a pound of Clays, and I'm going to do some test firing, but I thought I'd get some other people's answers first. My only experience with Clays was about 5 years ago and it was only for jacketed and plated bullets, where it really shined. My purpose for the Clays will be 90% lead bullet loads, and I'm wondering if the fouling difference is worth the $2-3 extra I would pay per pound over Bullseye. |

Poodleshooter. I haven't shot Clays yet, but have used lot's of Bullseye, Unique, 5066 (long discontinued) W-231, Red Dot, #2400, ans W-296, all with lead bullets. Methinks that the main problem with fouling comes from the lubricant. Seems like the old Lyman "black stuff", 50/50 Alox/beeswax, and even the hard lubes foul just about the same. The hard lubes might be slightly less in fouling ability, but not so I've noticed. I just shoot the stuff and clean up afterwards. I only shoot lead bullets in my handguns and cast my own.

I started out reloading with bullseye and w-231.
I reloaded both jacketed and lead with them. Both were very dirty. Lead more then jacketed. I now only use Clay's with my 45 ACP rounds. The lead rounds( 200 gr lswc with 4.3grs of Clays) I load leave the gun very clean comparied to Bullseye. I believe that the combination of the lube and the dirt from the powder make it worse. BTW Remember load date is for reference only. Always work up to the stated load in you gun. |

Clays for cleanliness or izzit the lube?
I LOVE Universal Clays...I use it and other powders exclusively for cast bullet semi-auto work and Universal
is the cleanest! I load to 1000 fps or less (according to label and the Lee download algorithm (for load calculation to desired velocity) My biggest complaint is not fouling (there hasnt been any EVER) it's SMOKE from the alox-beeswax lube, which makes indoor range shooters think I'm shooting BP (till the smell it) But I'll be "bleeped" if I pay $3.50 a stick for lube when I can get it for $0.50 for the equivalent stick length Yodar |
