Browning A-5 16 gauge
Hello,
I was wondering if someone could help date my Browning 16 Gauge Auto 5. It was given to me by my Grandfather and I would like to learn more about when it was produced. Strictly for sentimental value, not retail. The Serial number is X548--. The barrel was manufactured in Missouri. Thanks for you help, it is greatly appreciated. |

Serial number range for 1947 is x1001 to x13666, that would make your 16 gauge standard A5 a 1947 year.
Please note the barrel may be marked Browning Arms Company St Louis Missouri on the top of the barrel. To the right of that mark just in line with the forearm you should find Made in Belgium. |

I'm so confused...
According to Browning's own site, the serial range for 1947 is: 237001-249000 http://www.browning.com/customerserv...tail.asp?id=13 Is there another chart I am unaware of? |

http://www.browning.com/customerserv...tail.asp?id=13 [Is there another chart I am unaware of?] That is the wrong SN listing - notice that it doesn't discriminate between gauges ? 16ga A-5's were serial numbered separately from 12 ga's - Starting with SN1 in 1909 to 130616 in 1947, when a new SN system was instituted, with an "X" SN letter prefix that continued until 1953, when the 16ga SN sysem was split to differentiate between Standard 16's & Sweet 16's via 3 or 4 different/changing systems every few years - so that you can't tell a player w/o a scorecard. The correct SN breakdown is in the back of the BBGV. . |

Thanks,
Strange that Browning itself doesn't list this info for 47-53, but does list the post 53 differentiations... |
