New to me Colt 1991A1

Just purchased this Colt today. It is an ORM (old roll mark) Colt 1991A1. I took it to the range and it shot great with no malfunctions and rounds hit point of aim for me. When I got home, I replaced the MSH with a G.I. style one with lanyard loop and also changed the trigger to an Auto Ordnance shorter one. I plan on ordering an actual G.I. stamped trigger for it. I also put G.I. grips on it. The idiot scratch as well as other scratches were already there. I don't mind as I wish to carry this one.

Love it, can't go wrong with any colt 1911 design. Plan on leaving the sights stock?

I think I may leave it as it is now. The sights are fine and the mid length trigger is growing on me.

The '91 is a sleeper, as a lot of Colt fans really hate the rollmark.
They're a reasonable facsimile of a M1911A1, and they have great bones for customization.

Do you carry it hammer down like that? Cocked and locked with no hammer retention seems risky and that holster looks ripe for a gun grab. Just curious.

It's a posed photo on a cold range.

I think GI Black Plastic Grips would also look nice on it , they have surplus GI contract black plastic grips that are very tough material, looks like the same stuff used to make bayonet grips for the old Vietnam era M16 bayonets.

Since it's marked Colt M1991A1 it brings back memories of DESERT STORM the first GULF WAR , also known as "Operation Desert Shield"

since it came out around the same time as the conflict in the Persian Gulf (1990 - 1991)

I used to carry the Government Model Series 70. I have 4 of them, but if I were wanting another, The 1991A1 would be at the top of the list.

Note: the reason I used to carry one is I had a reality check and figgered if I was ever unfortunate enough to have to pull it out, Law Enforcement would take it as evidence. That meant that I might not get it back. I didn't want to take a chance of loosing it. I started carry a sidearm that I could live without.

All of my guns are dedicated to certain family members after I am gone. I didn't want to screw anyone out of their inheritance.

I own two of the 1991A1's. One is like yours but the other came from the Colt Custom Shop and was called the "Limited".

The latter gun came with S&A safety, beavertail grip safety, a match barrel and bushing and shoot very well indeed. As a matter of fact both guns are reliable with about anything I've put in them, even 255 grain SWC meant for .45 Colt.

You are going to like that gun.

This is actually my second ORM M1991A1. The first, as shown below, was purchased in 1996. I had a local gunsmith do some customizing. I still have it and it is one of my favorites. I have been on the lookout for the matte blue 1991 for some time. I wanted one to make a quasi WW2 looking 1911A1. I shot it again yesterday to make sure it worked after the new trigger install and new springs. It shoots great and I believe this new one is going to get lots of use.

Makes me wish I still had mine-----paid like $369 or $399?? NIB back in the day------nothing wrong with it and it shot great-----traded it off for something I thought I wanted more back then.

Have a stainless new roll mark 91 now but it doesn't have the charm the old one had.

I'm a fan of the ORM 1991A1s, they're solid guns out of the box and great platforms for custom builds. I have three, one in each size, all customs. That stainless one looks great!

Cocked and locked doesn't require "hammer retention", the hammer isn't going to fall without deactivating the thumb safety, engaging the grip safety, and pulling the trigger. And, if by some impossible happenstance it should fall on it's own, there is the half cock notch to stop it.

And, if you like the idea of a belt, suspenders, another belt, and . . . the '91 has Series 80, too.

Good lookin' piece, Eightyduece. I've always liked the lanyard staple on the MSH, but have rarely used one. I once nearly capsized a canoe while wearing a WWll Remington-Rand 1911A1, and as I struggled to keep me and the boat upright, that lanyard staple was foremost in my mind. For the rest of the trip, I jury-rigged a loop with some shroud line and a metalic snap clip from one of our packs. And BTW, the gun was none the worse for wear in spite of the dunking.

RickB, I'd be interested in a cpl of pics of that good lookin' holster in your pic, front and back please, if you're up for it. Thanx in advance, Rod

I had a Commander 1991A1 some years back. Sold or traded it for something else. It was a darn good gun as I remember.

Just looking at those pics from OP,happened to notice the additional trigger finger relief right under the slide stop. The prints I have don't show it but my 1943 RR has it.Fine detail and something to look for in replicated models.
