Tell me about IMR 4166

IMR 4166 vs Imr 4064 and Varget in 22/250 50 and 55 grain loads and 6mm creed with 65 grain V-Max.

One of the newest powders. Super clean, super consistent in my testing. I got 2fps SD's across 10 shots on my first test load. Seems kinda varget-ish. Not slow enough for fast 6mm's with heavy bullets so I put it to one side as that was my use case. Really temp stable.

I was using Varget in the 22/250 as it worked out the best. Tough call since the barrel is basically shot out. When I seat the bullet to touch the lands it barely has a toe hold in the case. The former powder was 4064.

6mm Creed with the 65 grain V-MAX, devastating round, not more than a 243 but they just hit coyote hard far off. That was with 4064. R19 is the powder for the 105's.

I have an opportunity to pick up a keg of 4166, Think I'll go for it.

It's a great powder, just a question of is it great for what you're doing. Kind of middle of the road burn rate is perfect for light bullets in big cases and medium bullets in middle of the road cases. In this case, it's essentially identical to 4064 in charge weight and expected velocities. Would be a great option for you and will be super temp stable compared to the IMR 4064 (another of my favorite powders).

I wanted to try the 4166 when it first came out for my 7mm-08AI. Due to the previously mentioned performance simularities of 4064.
Alas, i burned the throat out before i could find any locally. 140gr Berger VLD wouldn't get close enough to the lands and still be held by the case.

Now that the rifle has been rebarreled to 250 Savage, i'm again thinking of seeing if it's readily available locally. If so may try it as opposed to the H414 i'm currently using.

Why are you insisting on buying locally? If you can't find it locally, just order online. Or is that not legal in your state or? http://powdervalleyinc.com regularly has "we pay the hazmat" sales and will certainly beat pricing on almost any brick and mortar operation. Of course right now it doesn't matter a bit because there is no gunpowder available except a bit of US869 and some titegroup.

My Savage 10T first loads were with IMR 4350 with a Hornady 95gr.SST. I understood that was No. 1 choice. I fire formed new Lapua brass with a ladder test. The Savage didn't seam to like it. Then I tried 4166 on the next batch of brass. I was in a hurry for a hunting load. Ill tell ya that was the easiest load development I have ever stumbled on. My son shot his first 1/2" group with it last week. For that 95gr. SST with CCI small BR primers it is a winner. The 6mm CR has a hunting load. I like 4166
