My .223 F-TR build for 2020

So last year I shot about 4 F-TR 3X600 matches and I quickly realized that my Savage 12 FTR gets dam expensive trying to feed a ,30 cal at 66 rounds per match. While I did good, it's a small group of about 6 guys and I'm the only one shooting F-TR , all the others are running "F Open" and shooting more high end precision 6.5 CM's and that dam 6.5 is such a flat and fast round I consistently get my butt whooped. I score a 8 , my right side 6.5 neighbor shoots a 9. I shoot a 10 , and my other left side 6.5 neighbor shoots an X . F class targets are tough and you REALLY have to earn the 10's and X's. Still fun but I doubt I can run score for score with these guys. That being said if i'm going to get spanked, just suck it up buttercup and shoot something cheaper and just shoot against myself ! So with a bunch of parts, and a rare Savage 110FP .223 that's been sitting in the back of my safe for the past 7 years without being shot , all's I had to buy was a very nice Choate Ultimate Sniper stock on closeout at Midway for $200 , and i'm ready to rock. I'm running my fav Sightron SIII 8-32X50 and a Flex pod. Sounds like it won't take much to achieve a consistient .75 MOA at 100 yds with a 69 gr match bullet and either Varget or H4895 . So on to load development

I set up a .223 FTR on an AR.
6.5 twist 28" Krieger and bobsled.
90 gr JLK VLD and lots of Varget.

That didn't make it shoot with a .308 175 SMK at 1000, no matter what the BC indicated, but it would hammer at 600.

With my Savage 110FP i'm a bit limited with it's 1-9" twist but I should be fine at 600 unless it's a very windy outing. Interesting thing I learned with my 110FP is the fact that this particular model is mid 1990's and it's based off of the "large shank" long action. I guess this particular model is highly sough after. Well reguarded as a outstanding shooter.

Road Clam,You should have no problem shooting 75 gr BTHP Match or 77 gr BTHP match bullets with the Savage 1-9 twist barrel. I shoot them all the time out of my old 12 FLVSS Savage. Your gun should be a Small shank barrel,Savage only uses the Large shank on the Target actions and WSM/WSSM actions.

The US Army Rifle Team gave up shooting .224 caliber bullets in NRA 1000 yard service rifle matches. 7.62 NATO Garand platforms typically outscored them. They had no more M14NM rifles that might do the job.

So, in 2012 they got the NRA to allow AR10's in 308 Win be allowed in such events. Then winning and setting records shooting Berger 185s in hot loads. Their 20" barrels needed that to keep them supersonic past target range.

Thanks for the feedback. I have a TON of 77's and was actually thinking of trying some, what the heck worst thing that would happen is the tumble ! I'll give them a try.

I do in fact have the 110 long action large shank in .223. Like I commented, its a rare model, Savage only made this configuration in .223 for a few years.

That would be the very first 110 action in 223 that I've ever heard of having a Large shank barrel on it.
Savage only put Large shank barrels on long action RUM cartridges,and on short actions for WSM cartridges.
They also use Large shank barrels on the model 12 / 112 Target actions which are single shots.

I had found a Savage 110FP in 223 the other year. Traded in a Rossi R243 and some cash for it. Shop was asking $259.

I'm still using the factory Tupperware stock. Would really like to upgrade it!

I'm planning on a 100 yard "groung hog" match next month, followed by a 600 yard match in May. Yes, she told me to use her gun.

I'm using LC cases.
69gr SMK, TMK (got some 70gr RDF to try)
Alliant PP2000MR powder.

If the 77gr stabilizes, then i'll have to try them!
