How about a review on the G36?

Have you guys ever thought about doing a review on the G36? Its been a hot topic here at TFL for the last couple weeks. With the subject of Britain dumping the SA80 everyone wants to know what its worth. What would Denny think of it?

Getting a G36 for a T&E should not be a problem. I'll get one of the guys on it. We'll also be taking a close look at the SIG 552 Commando in an upcoming issue.

Since I can't get My hands on one.....

I'd like to hear opinions on magazine durability compared to USGI M16 mags, ergonomics, extractor strength (in comparison to other military weapons) and of course, accuracy.

Also, if you can do some research into which countries have adopted the G36 so far. Nobody really seems to know. Lots of mythology going around.

I just hope I get that issue with the SIG 552
That has been one of my "dream projects" for a while now.
I'm in the prosess of getting a permit to buy one.
Have been looking for tests of the 552 all over.

This is what I think should be in a test:
-Accuracy. At 10, 15, 25, 50, 100, 150, 200 and 300 meters/yards.
-The differense between POI and POS at the closest distances.
-Ergonomics. The testers oppinion.
-Suggested sighting systems for this rifle. The ones I'm considering: EO-Tech, Trijicon TriPower and Reflex, and Leupolds new Mk 4 1-3X.

Well. Those are some of the things I miss in (other magasine's) articles.

BTW. Got my Neostead today!

This gun is going to get a beating!!!
I'll keep you updated.
Or maby I should write an article? What do you think?

Kobun-
Considering the short (8.9") barrel the tester got fair accuracy with the 552 using a Leupold 3.5-10X40 scope. Top load accuracy-wise was achieved with Hornady 55-gr. TAP, shooting a 10-shot group of 1.85 inches.

Contact me by email ([email protected]) in regards to the Neostead. The sample Stead showed me years ago was an early pre-production prototype. Curious as to how his project finally turned out.

I played with the Rohrbaugh at SHOT. I was very impressed. I just want to know if it actuall works though.

Thanks for the idea, Larry. I spoke briefly with them at SHOT and at the time production gun availabilty was "uncertain." I definetily don't want to review a one-off that has been tuned to work as that's unfair (if not downright unethical) to our readers. When full-blown production pieces are available we'll take a look at them.

I know the Germans, and the Spanish are using the G36 for sure. Others, I don't know. I do know the G36 can have a mag well using the M16 mags though.

GA State SWAT has been using the G36 for awhile now, and they are going to be switching to the Shorty version within the next couple of months. They wear Aimpoints on theirs.

BTW- This is NOT the same team that we did a profile on in 2001. That was the (reportedly now defunct) GBI SWAT, this is the Highway Patrol. Very High Speed unit.

IF in the report you can find out how the G36 has been holding up under real-world wear and tear and abuse, I'd be interested. I just hear the H&K ads on how great it is, but never any real-world data.

I actually bought the SWAT issue with the G36 review in it off the newsstand, way before I had even heard of TFL... Little would I ever imagine I'd be posting with the editor of that magazine

The original article was pretty good. How many rounds went through the G36 though? For some reason I got the impression of 960, but I don't think they ever said.

Why is it that Publishers and Editors have this need to portray themselves as "unavailable" except by snail-mail? (and then, they never reply, unless it's printed)

Personally, I think I must have missed some Bus 101 course that explained "untouchable means respect". I aways thought respect came from interaction. I also always thought that "good business" meant staying in touch with your customers.

Maybe we missed the boat. Maybe not. But S.W.A.T.'s readership is up 400% since us hayseeds took over. One more year of this and we'll take this show on the road and do the Tony Robbins thing!

Seriously, thanks for noting Denny's availability. I think (hope?) he gets a kick out of it. For my own part, I'll thank anyone that pays 30% more for a "GunRag" with substance. What started as a social experiment is quickly turning into a "movement".
