Evil Pawn Shop has an Iver Johnson TP22,,,

It has just the one magazine,,,
But appears to be in very nice condition.

His asking price is $159.00.

I found a manual (.pdf) for the gun on-line,,,
It has a very weird takedown procedure,,,
The trigger guard swings down.

I don't need it,,,
And I really don't want it,,,
But I thought I would ask you guys for opinions on the gun.

Was it a dog or was it a nice performer?

Is $159.00 a steal, average, or rip-off price?

The price is about right I think. You are lucky that you have a reasonable pawn shop nearby. All the ones near me have junk, and when you actually do find something nice they are proud of it to say the least...

I have one.it was my Father's carry gun when he wanted something small. It has always been very reliable for me.

Take down is along the lines of the Walther PPK.

I had to google it to see what the gun looks like. It looks like a Walther PPK clone, no wonder the take down is along the same line.
For $159, in the condition you stated, I think I would have bought it.

Total POS! I had one (or two depending on how you look at it) many, many years ago. It worked fine and accuracy wasn't bad for a pistol of its size but that one day all changed. While racking the slide to chamber a round, the frame broke right at the trigger pin. One look and seeing how thin the metal is here on the top and bottom of the trigger pin, I guess I should have seen that coming. Well, I sent it back (Iver Johnson was still in business back then) and they replaced the frame and sent it back so that's why you can look at it as having had 2 of them. Being an idiot rather than selling it right away, I decided to go out and shoot it more a few years later. Once again, the frame broke right in the same spot just like the last one. This time though, Iver Johnson had gone the way of the Dodo so I wound up selling it at a gunshow as a parts gun. If it were me, I would run like hell the other way rather than take a chance on that piece of crap if I were you.

Not the best quality gun ever made, but a fun plinker. At $100 to $150, I'd consider it. No more than $150 though. This is a size comparison, for those not familiar with the gun, between a Walther TPH and a PPK/s.

The IJ gun was a copy of a German ERMA copy of the Walther TPK. Both the ERMA and the IJ were die cast zinc. They worked fine and were accurate until the zinc got brittle and the guns fell apart.

Walther TPH clone. Basically a scaled down Walther PPK.

Sold here as the Walther TPH would not pass GCA 68 import restrictions.

Made in NJ, visited the "factory" once.

Always shot OK and was the choice for years for a deep concealment backup, before there were a lot of other choices.

Price seems fair, in fact if that were local to me I'd probably grab it myself. It's a "carry it a lot, shoot it a little" sort of thing.

That's not weird. A lot of blowback autoloaders work that way.

Thats a tough one. I wouldn't want to carry it nor shoot it much but what do you want for $159?

You could put the $159 toward a TPH...they're $500 to $700 that I've seen.

PSP, I have the identical model from American Arms. Sad they are out of business. Wish I had, at least, one more.
It is my carry gun. (please, no one start on me about .22lr as a carry gun. I know all the argument. It is my decision.)

Tis' the truth, it happened to my IJ TP-22 and quite spectacularly. Cracked the frame, the slide, and the trigger guard snapped. Not even the slightest injury at least.

I bought one when the first came out Mine was always relieable . I carried it back then Befor we had the mother may I carry lic. we have today.
I sold it as I tend to do at times . Kinda of miss it a times

Wish I had found this forum/thread/issues before I bought mine today. I talked the local gun store owner down from 169$ to 129$ and walked out happy...until I put rounds through it. I "hear" it likes CCI Mini-Mag ammo, though I have yet t try it, I can tell you it doesn't like Federal ( jams, extraction fail, failure to load/jam) nor Winchester Xpress (sp?) (misfire, failure to load/jam). Those cons aside, once it decided to work it was pretty accurate despite heavy trigger pull. I think mine's going in the safe and I'm going to stick with carrying a reliable .25 auto most of the time ( only when I am carrying concealed, I carry a Glock 30 the rest of the time ). I bought the pistol thinking it would be far cheaper to buy ammo for it than the .25, and I felt it was a good deal. The pistol itself is in very good condition...no cracks, rust, even the bluing is still good, came with 2 mags and a pocket holster.

Gataochii, Welcome to the forum. You did well by your purchase... good price, good condition and two mags, (normally you see one). Minimags worked well in my PX22, seen above, and faultered on some bulk ammo. Enjoy the gun for what it is.

I read them this morning and they gave me a basis from which to search for more web info.

I think I'm going to pass on the little gun,,,
I found far too many instances of them breaking near the trigger guard.

So even though it's in very nice condition,,,
I think I will pass on it as I want shootable guns.

What I was originally thinking was,,,
It would be a nice pistol to encase as a gift.

Right now I regularly go shooting with three undergrads,,,
Two young ladies and one young man.

I'm always on the lookout for good buys on used handguns,,,
Ones that I can make a little kit for and use as a graduation present.

I was hoping that this little gun would be of a high enough quality,,,
That it would be a reliable plinker I could turn into a gift.

Oh well,,,
I'm always looking.

I always know where to go to receive good answers.

And as it so happens The Evil Pawn Shop has one (Colt) right now,,,
Extremely good condition with the original fitted box and all of the accessories.

Unfortunately for me he is also asking a correspondingly high price of $550.00,,,
In the shape it's in with all the goodies it's worth it but it's no bargain.

I keep looking through his counters every week,,,
Eventually something will turn up in a good rimfire revolver or semi-auto.

One of the young men I shoot with loves my Ruger 22/45 and Beretta NEOS pistols,,,
He doesn't have a strong preference of one over the other,,,
He just likes sleek .22 target pistols.

Someday I'll find a nice used specimen for a bargain price,,,
Then I'll encase it with some spare mags and maintenance accessories.

Anyways I had to chuckle at your post,,,
You do seem to have a handle on my buying tendencies.

I had the same experience. I had a TP22. I liked it and carried it a lot. However the frame of mine also broke into two pieces. So I would say stay away from it.

Yes, I don't follow enough, is it a web business or just a local place where you know everyone and everyone knows you (makes me feel like singing the theme to Cheers)? It would be nice to have another TP22 to replace brittle Zn parts as needed

Mine was a very early one, I never put too many hyper-speed .22s in it and for the inexpensive quality of workmanship, it has been amazingly reliable. Fun little thing - oddly enough, it is pretty much the same width and size (it's actually a wee bit longer) than my Kahr P380 with is beautiful! Because of the softness of the metal in the slide - the front edge of the well where the safety goes to fire is peened a bit up. Other than changing the slide - if anyone knows enough about that to know how to finish it back to an uncratered look, the information would be terrific! No, I don't rely on .22s for my go-to sidearm type defense. That's what my Sig P229 is for. There's just something about inexpensive small .22s. Remember the Jennings <laughing> it was surprisingly accurate for a pot-metal cap gun!
