Tell me how to visualize the vital zone on a turkey..
Gonna try archery fall turkey next weekend, and with all those feathers on the outside, where exactly do you aim for heart/lungs? Any link to a picture to help me visualize? Thanks.

Use the blunt points and aim for the head. Otherwise use a good 3 or 4 blade muzzy around 125 grain and aim where the neck meets the body. Stay away from the wing area. That area is like body armor and I have seen it stop #6 shot from a shotgun before.
Also be prepared for a quick follow up shot or to run over and wring the suckers neck while it is flopping around after being hit.

I have to say....
I disagree with that first reply. Often an arrow will pass all the way through the turkey.
The guillitine broadhead is one way to go...aiming for the neck with the 4 inch radius cut blades. If you are using a regular broadhead, aim for the base of the wing...you will not have a problem with penetration at reasonable distances. The vitals are right through the base of the wing..higher than you might think. Also, a shot just under the fan (when in strut) is perfect....aim at the base of the fan or the tail hole. I do not take chest shots because of the breast bone and meat..plus you can cut the beards off. Do NOT try for just mid-bird... |

thanks for disagreeing with me but I have yet to just wound or miss a bird in the last 15 years (100% success rate). To each his own, just like some prefer head/neck shots and others like lung/heart shots on deer.
My experience with shooting around the wing area is that there are tendancies for the bird to deflect the arrow with its wing at impact.

turkeys
Turkey hunting is my focus and forte....with a shotgun, the base of the neck is prime...
Taking this shot with s standard broadhead is risky..if you shoot too low in the neck where it joins the body you can miss spine and vitals. The wing is not going to deflect the arrow at 15 or 20 yards...often archers turn the poundage down on the bows to prevent quick pass throughs(I shoot 60 pou ds for turkeys and 85 for deer). |

hawk, seriously? Are you just a huge feller or what? 60# for turkey and 85# for deer? Just curious, I shoot 52# and shoot through everything, including a plate shot on a 325# hog at 33 yds.
