1. I feel your pain.
2. Save the money for two projects. My 1911 is also known as the new drapes also gun.
3. Work extra to have a stash of money for guns. That's my plan. I buy guns with extra gigs off the main income stream.
4. Make reasonable arguments why the upcoming apocalypse mandates an arsenal update.

Otherwise - let's cry together.

I should close this as silly but what the hey.

30 some years back I made a deal, overtime money was mine to do with as I saw fit. Now, most of it went to other things, but some of it was my gun money, and I worked a LOT of overtime back then.

Now, I'm retired, and my gun money is, essentially gone, absent patient saving up. On the other hand, I have a few things is can sell or trade, so I'm not quite done, yet...

Regardless whether its a little or a lot, the important thing is that your gun budget does not harm your relationship with spouse or SO. Otherwise, it can get even MORE expensive, and less gun money!

I was so sad when my 6-year relationship ended about a year ago.

Now I'm about to finish school with no debt, and I can't help hearing cash register sounds and picturing many, many guns.

There's a big gun show coming up in March and I was drooling at the possibility of going with a couple grand in my pocket. Then the better half informs me that she wants to redo the bathroom and needs the entire tax refund to get it done. So guess who's not getting any new guns for a while.

Is it wrong to have a secret fund set up that the wife doesn't know about specifically for gun purposes?

Nope - not at all... .
Matter of fact, things like that can come in handy if you play your cards right and are willing to make a sacrifice from time to time.

A number of years ago I bought a new car.
I was asking the F&I guy about monthly payments and how much less they'd be if I put more money down.

All out of the blue, my wife jumps in and asks what the payment would be if we put down an extra $5,000.00!!!!
I looked over @ her like she had a giant eyestalk growing out of her head and asked her what corner she planned on working the next month or so!

She just said, "It's the dog's money".
Here she'd been sticking away spare money from rebates and stuff like that for some time and sticking it in a separate bank account she used to buy the dogs treats and stuff.

Years later, I still have fond recollections of that and giver her a free pass when she pulls a "Let's go ahead and put in a new tub, new ceramic tile, paint and new vinyl floor in the bath" - all out of the blue.

That's a Glock 30 sitting in that pile BTW
Or maybe a Commander sized 1911....

It's hard to tell! Lol!

I'd say it depends. If it's a fund like Hal's example, where the money came from sources other than the "official" family income stream, that's fine. But if it involves any form of dishonesty about how much you make, or how much you sold something for... not so much. Dishonesty is bad for relationships....

A good tile floor is a real treat for your house, though.

Be sure to start with a good subfloor, screw it down and work up. If a wet location, put down the waterproof matting on top.

Use a wet saw to cut your tiles, nothing else is as accurate. Color match the grout, and keep the joints narrow.

I have found that one of the best sources of gun money is travel reimbursements and per diem payments that my employer gave directly to me. Makes a great slush/gun fund. Wives nearly always have a slush fund, why can't you.

Some years back there was an article in a hunting magazine titled "Gun Running Past Your Wife". It was comical. Might be able to find it on the internet.

I've found that the best way to have gun money is to not have a woman that your committed to. When the " mood" hits, go to the bar. I learned enough after seeing my mom leave my dad and then later in life seeing it happen to friends. Women like a mans money, but the problem is I like my money too. That's just my 2 cents.

As the only bread earner in my house with a wife and four daughters-I set the rules many years ago before kids came.Real simple-I cover all the bill's-she runs the house-after the bill's are paid we split it.If I choose to save up and buy another 1911 thats on me-If she wants new carpet thats on her and if she wants even more she can get a job.Life is short,I work 50-60 hours a week every week-I ain't gonna beg for my gun and reloading money.

Ethically? yes. If you have to hide it from her, you two have issues that ought to be resolved.

Legally? No. Not until you try to hide it from her divorce attorney!

My first wife would go through my wallet when I slept, to get her spending money. That was one of the reasons she was my first wife....

The current Mrs AMP wouldn't think of doing such a thing. Guess she just isn't as smart as the first one, since she's stuck with me for 35 years....

+1

Back in the '90's, I was often included in our client's contracts as an additional "engineering maintenance" man for remote television production shoots. I'd get a $150 fee above and beyond my salary and per diem for this. I'd do 3 or 4 of these a month. so I had about $600 every month to spend on guns. My wife was cool with me using this money as I wanted so long as I didn't touch my paycheck.

I could buy a nice 9mm back in those days for $300, and I bought A LOT of hardware back then.

I call it my "MDK money". As in "Mama Don't Know"

It comes from selling scrap metal at the shop (catalytic converters bring good $$!), parting out scrap cars and the occasional profit from fixing up and selling a car one of our customers didn't want to put money into.

Last year I was able to add several guns via the MDK fund.

Something always seems to come up.

This is a fun one. While I agree that it is probably wrong to hide and sneak things from your wife, SO, etc. It is certainly tempting to have a separate account set up. The per/deim travel expenses thing is pretty clever. I luckily don't travel much lately, but if you are careful you can make some pretty good savings on per diem. Get some sandwich stuff or whatever instead of going out to eat when traveling, I think I get the idea. My problem is I am the one who comes up with the honey-do list that turns into a me-do list. There always seems to be something coming up, or a new project for me. Why in the heck did I buy that broken down old pickup project last month? Spending discipline is not my strong suit.

birthday

Well, I am pretty excited now. My brother just bought me a 7 mm for my birthday. So maybe the best strategy is having a really nice brother. That was quite a surprise.

Yeah - I have to confess this tile project started out as my idea.
I was looking at the floor in the kitchen and thinking how ratty it looked after 26 years.
It was a builders grade sheet vinyl to begin with and we should have replaced it ten years ago when we redid the kitchen.
I went out an bought some vinyl tiles for the kitchen and while I was @ it, I picked up enough extra to do the bath and the small entry hall.

My wife started talking about pricing in a whirlpool or Jacuzzi tub as long as we were going to be working on the bathroom.
One thing lead to another and voila' - major project time...

I just picked up the tile & by coincidence, a couple weeks ago I'd been looking at guns and thought - "Jeeze, I just spent as much on that pile of tile as they wanted for a Glock 30!"

To the OP. You're not alone. My desire for an STI Apiero just got delayed indefinitely due to the exotic granite my wife picked for the new home we're building. That's okay though. The kitchen will look stunning and my wife is happy. It's not like I don't have a safe full of pistols already.

My wife and I have separate accounts and we have divided up the bills. We have done this since we have been married...since 1975. When we were bringing up the kids and paying off our mortgage, extra cash was hard to come by. The last decade or so have been different and I try to tuck aside at least $50 a week for as long as I can for future toys. Put I away and forget about it and live within my means otherwise. Some weeks I can save more but it's always at least $50.
That's how I have obtained my guitars, guns and other fun stuff. I don't have to ask permission so long as I keep her happy with dinners, movies and other fun stuff. Every once in awhile she will put something in the safe and will notice the growing gun collection and will ask me how many guns I have bought lately. I tell her I have no secrets, all she has to do is count them and keep track. I'm not sure if she has done it or not. Hey it works for us!

Ha! I'd be laying that tile with a smirk on my face.

(The tile wouldn't have to be laid STRAIGHT or anything would it?)

After you take care of your obligations a little 'his money' and a little 'her money' to do with as you please can be the lubrication that keeps your relationship running smoothly.

Freedom.

LOL!
My wife won't let me near the thinset!

Neither will the tile guy .

I'm the designated tile cutter/trimmer.
I'm the one that gets to have dirty water tossed all over the front of him while the tile guy is yelling at me to hurry up, but for the love of God, don't chip any of those tile when you cut them!
