Pair of all weather model 70's....

I have had a number of 300 mags..These 2 I think I will keep....Both are CRF....
The one in front is a 300 WSM....The one in back is a 300 win mag....It is featherweight with a BOSS..almost a pleasure to shoot and very accurate....

Good choice, I've a few too. A 30-06 Fwt in a McMillan Edge.

JMR40...I really like the Mcmillan stock....

I have some pre-64s too..but it is nice to hunt with a model 70 in all weather conditions.....

It's really none of my business how you spend your money, but I'm just kinda curious why anyone would have 2 rifles chambered for 2 calibers that are ballistic "twins"?

Don't the 300 WSM and the 300 Win Mag have almost identical muzzle velocities? And identical bullet weights available?

So my question is - what can one do that the other can't? And vice-versa?

Does one accomodate bullet weights that the other doesn't?

Does one shoot 3/4 inch tighter groups?

Perhaps one is 6 ounces lighter, or 2 inches shorter?

How much difference is there in the amount of recoil between the two?

I just can't see that there is enough difference between the two to warrant buying a second one ($1,000 or so), plus a second Zeiss scope ($400-$600, I would guess).

I'm just saying.

If I had to choose only one of these, it would be the 300 Win Mag, because:

Cheaper ammo
More stores stock 300 WM ammo than 300 WSM
The BOSS allows you to fine tune the accuracy
The BOSS reduces recoil

On the other hand, I know a guy who bought Rem 700 BDL rifles in every chambering available - just because he liked how they looked. He had the money, he had the inkling, so he did it because he could. He was equipped to shoot everything from prairie dogs to elephants, but usually only hunted deer.

Easily explained....My wife hunts too....Also I might have to supply my son or SIL's ...with a gun sometimes....Also I'm a gun nut....

I really like both of your rifles, but would pass on the 300 WM in favor of the WSM in a heartbeat. I've had both and kept the WSM. I get 98-99% of the bullet speed, but with about 90% of the recoil. The WSM is also proving to be more accurate and is more efficient from shorter barrels. In a nutshell you get near 300 WM performance, in a 308 sized package, with hot loaded 30-06 recoil.

The WSM's have only existed since 2000, ammo costs and availability used to be a concern, but no more. Most of the other WSM's have died, but the 300 took off faster than most any chambering in history. It took 25 years and being adopted by Jack O'Connor before the 270 gained any success. Winchester almost dropped the round. After only 12 years it is well ahead of the 270 at the same time.

I can't recall the last time I saw a store that stocked 300 WM ammo and not 300 WSM. They are now within $2 of each other price wise. Both are too expensive for me to not reload for and I find the 300 WSM much easier to load, and much cheaper since it takes far less powder to get almost the same speeds.

Keg, great looking rifles. I own 2- 300 win mags and love both. Both shoot great and I have one that I had built for 600 yrd. bench rest shooting with heavy barrel that will shoot in the low fours @ 100 yards.

I disagree the 300 win. short mags. will shoot more accurate than the 300 win. mag. I have not had one beat me yet!! lol I agree you can't have enough firearms. I too have several that are the same cal. jmo

I got to countin..and I got five 30-30's....so having the same caliber I guess really don't matter.....
