remington 700 sps varmint

I'm purchasing a new model 700 chambered for 22-250. Has anyone experimented with factory loads through this gun? I'm looking for suggestions on accurate out of the box ammo. Your help is appreciated.

I know this doesn't help but if it's anything like the VSF II it will shoot. Went and shot cranes at the catfish ponds the other day. I was using my friends remington model 700 VSF II 22-250. Longest shot was 377 yards so it should shoot.

i've always had very good results with Hornady. try a few boxes from different makers & let the rifle tell you what it likes.

best accuracy should be with 50 grain bullets at around 3700fps.i can't tell you what brand to try.i've never shot factory rounds out of any of my rifles, and never will.

Since you haven't gotten a caliber specific answer for your SPS, I'll throw out that my closest rig is a 220 Swift. They have similar ballistics and the same rate of twist, 1:14. Mine likes Hornady 50 gr V-Max Moly (Varmint Express.) Another good one, that I shoot in my SPS Varmint in .223, are the Black Hills match loads.

i don't understand why gun makers are still making 22-250's with a 1in14 twist.that limits you to a no bigger than 50gr bullet.savage uses a 1in 12 so you can go up to a 55 grain maybe 60.other gun manufacturers should follow their leed

Ziggy, I think that since the availability of higher weight for caliber (longer ) , Higher BC bullets has increased the manufacturers will have to eventually make rifles with tighter twist rates to take advantage of them.

However some of these higher BC bullets take longer to stabilize. If your shooting at 100yds you may not like the groups you get . But if you look at the same ammo, same rifle, groups at 300 you might be amazed and very happy.

I think the gunmakers are affraid they'll get a flood of returned rifles from customers that swear the rifles won't shoot decent groups at 100 yds no matter what weight bullet they use . Over spinning a light bullet is just as bad as under spinning a heavy long bullet due to sectional density and consistancy of jacket thickness.

My .243 SPS Varmint liked Winchester Ballistic silvertips.

why shoot 55 grians

Man you guys are missing the point of the 22-250..

I shoot 40 grains out of mine and they are a LASER beam.
If you want to shoot heavy rounds in .22 get a .223

Try it you will be very happy...

my reasoning is this.with a 10mph cross wind a 40gr bullet going 4000fps has up to a 30 inch wind drift at 400 yrds vs a 50 grain going 3700 and drifting 20inches at 400 yrds or a 55 gr going 3600 and drifting 19 inches off target.all of them have the same amount of drop at 400 yards almost.the 40 grain has an inch more drop than both the 50 and 55 grain bullets actually.this is if you measure the bullet drop from the muzzle,it is actual bullet drop.this is fact,i took it from pages 677,696,and 700 of the sierra 50th anniversary edition reloading manual.you may be very surprised how many less hogs you miss if you switch from that 40gr to the 50.the twist in a 22-250 is made for a 50-55 gr bullet and the 40 most likely will get less accuracy from rifling damage and leave copper in your barrel.i have pushed copper splinters out of my barrel from using fast light bullets in the past but they were hornady's so maybe it was the softer bullet.if you ever do use a 40gr bullet please make sure you don't use one made for the 22hornet.it will turn to dust in air before it gets to the target.

Didn't your dad teach you that cranes are Federally protected?

Because a lot of manufacturers know they branded their customers in the 60s and 70s, and they don't have to evolve.

thanks

Thanks all, very informative. It's a rainy day so i think i'm going ammo shopping! Can't wait to see how does. I've had good luck with hornady's out of a model 700 222 in the past. I think i'll start out with a hornady 50-55 grain and see how i do. Next spring is gonna be a bad time to be a groundhog... or crane

Until recently there were not many "heavy weight" 224 bullets offered. The bullets kind of came along (in my opinion) with the popularity of your larger 22 wildcats, not because everyone wants to shoot them in their 22-250's.

Sure competitors have used them for years out of 223's but the primary use of the 22-250 has been for varminting. If a shooter wanted heavier bullets, less wind drift, and more energy they simply went up to a 6mm of some make.

Some 22-250's with a 1 in 14 will shoot the heavier bullets. I have a M77 that I have used the Speer 70gr SemiSpitzer in for years. Now the key here is "SemiSpitzer", this is not a long bullet with a high BC. It is this fact that allows it to be stablized in a slower twist rifle. Also heavy for caliber bullets are at their best when pushed at max velocities.

So I say suck it up and move on up to a 6mm if you want to shoot bullets over 55gr. If you dont agree thats fine, but just take a look at the ballistics and decide if its worth trying to push a bullet at 22-250 velocities that has been designed for say the 22/284.

Thats just my opinion.

Rem 700 SPS Varminter

I have this model in .308.After it had 2 boxes put through it,I am getting 1/2" groups at 300 yards with the cheapest ammo at wl-mart(federal hi-shok 150 gr.)The mark X trigger really impressed me as did the whole rifle. Not sorry one bit that I didn't go with the Savage.
