A good opening day

The grandson and I tagged out on opening day. I shot two does that were in a open field about 100 yards away. As soon as I shot the first one, the second one starting running and I got her through the shoulder with a 80 yard running shot. The rifle is a 20-inch Rock River Arms AR15 in .223 with a Burris RT-6 1-6x scope. I used the Sierra 65 grain GameKing. The grandson shot his button buck from 70 yards with a double lung/heart shot. His rifle is a ATI Omni AR15 in .223 with a red dot sight. He used factory Federal 62 grain Fusion.

But. But. But! You can't kill deer with a .223! The vacuum caused by internet ballistics experts collectively gasping and preparing to bestow upon you their collective wisdom will cause the Earth to collapse into a black hole!

Nicely done.

The deer in our neck of the woods are unaware that they are immune to .223 bullets. The grandson got in some shooting practice this past summer. I have a S&W .22 AR that happens to be setup exactly the way his is. Since it was a .22, I let him shoot quit a bit. We also shot his with some of my reloads to let him get used a bit more recoil. The red dot sight works out fine as eye relief isn't an issue.

I have the same RRA, but I changed the stock to a PRS. I've taken a few deer with it using the Hornady 75gr BTHP. I remember learning a lot from my grandfather when we hunted. You have just given your grandson a lifetime of great, great, memories. Good shooting and better eating, congratulations .

Congrats to you and your grandson! I also use the federal premium ammo with Sierra gamekings as my deer round for my .308, they are great for deer.

You should heard the amount of trash talking that went on, especially since his dad and two sisters didn't get one that day. Pretty much everyone around here hunts, so he had me print him a picture of his deer so he could take it to school to show his classmates. He told them about his AR15 and now he has major street credits because they think he has a machinegun.

How do you like that bullet as far as hunting?
