30/06 sabot

Years ago I tried using sabots to load .22 caliber bullets in a 30/06 case. Accuracy in both my 30/06's was dismal. Have there been any improvements since then or has anyone learned the secret handshake?

I played with them for a funded project and nothing has changed for a rifle. Conversely, we played with the Barnes saboted solid copper slugs and accuracy from a rifled 12 ga barrel I thought was astounding. Groups at an inch at 100 yds were common but none better. I would imagine that the twist rate is a major factor in the accuracy issue of sabots.

I think the handshake has a 1-in-12 twist in it.
(vice the `06's 1-in-10)

I've played around with sabot loads in my SKS rifle using 52 gr. FBHP bullets,groups run about 4" at 100 yds. I only tried one load and didn't experiment past that.

I would think that a .310 dia. sabot would probably shoot better,at 50 yds. I could hit a pop can pretty regular and they cycles fine through the rifle. I like having alternative loads for my rifles,you just never know what you might have to end up shooting in them somewhere along the line.

I need to order some more sabots and play with the load and a few different bullets.

I too have loaded Barnes copper slugs in sabots for my Browning 12 ga. A-bolt. The accuracy was amazing so I know handloaded sabots can shoot. The only reason I quit loading them was I couldn't find the component kits anymore.

If you would still like to have some of the Barnes saboted solids, email Ty Herring at Barnes and ask for product #57500 and a description of the slugs with sabots. They are not a cheap date, about $1.25 a pop as I remember with 10 slugs and sabots per box.

Your LE buddies made those rifle sabots cartridges, Illegal, especially in Kalifornia. Since they don't serve cold beers in prison, I'll let others argue about the legality of sabots.

Hmm, don't know about Cali but they are legal here. In any case LEO's don't make law, they can enforce them at times.

I tried some using 180 grain .308 bullets out of my 50 BMG years back @ 5260 FPS they were the fastest thing I have loaded but never better than 3" @ 100.
