Whitetail load 2010
I am going to use a new load this year. Last year I shot a buck with a 140 gr. Sierra SBT and a doe with a 120 gr. Barnes TTSX. This year I am using a 120 gr. Sierra SPT. Here is my load and data:
Winchester N.P. Brass 2.540" trim length CCI 200 Large Rifle Primer 120 gr. Sierra SPT 61 grs. H1000 .015" Free Bore Avg. Velocity= 2846 ft./sec. 4 shot group at 100 yards. Yes....no, I think I'm ready.

You neglected to say what cartidge this was ..... I'm guessin' .284 Winchester?

2846 f/sec is a bit slow for a 120 grain bullet..... this a reduced load for a kid?
If it prints well, great. I have had poor results in both the .270 WIN rifles I tried H1000 in.... IMR 7828 worked mush better for me. |

If you aren't going to be shooting over 200-250 yards you are all set. Where I hunt, sometimes a 300 yard shot is all ya get, so a bit more velocity is nice. But to me, the real deal is the accuracy. Shooting a 300 win mag that gives 5 inch groups ain't worth the effort, regardless of whether it is the nut behind the trigger or the load or the gun. A 257 Roberts that shoots 1 inch groups at a hundred yards and has 1000 ft lb of energy at 300 yards beats the snot out of the 300 win mag for deer or antelope. IMO
