cowboy action
For cowboy action shooting I have heard the guns have to be period specific. What exactly does that mean ? Does the gun have to be an original made back then or can you shoot a replica ? Would a Savage 99 in 300 savage cal be ok ?

Replicas are ok and the Savage is not. The rifle must be chambered in a pistol cartridge. Google SASS for complete rules.

Go to the SASS web site and down load their handbook. The book spells out what can be used and not used.
I found that rifles have to be 32 caliber or larger and no bigger than 45 caliber. |

As others noted, their rule book will tell you the details of which firearms are allowed. |

Period specific with exceptions. They allow Ruger single actions and Henry rifles. Neither one is period specific.

Yes but not at .357 velocities and not with jacketed bullets. You will need two revolvers and a SXS shotgun or a Winchester 87 or 97 but you can only load two rounds in the repeaters.

The 56-50 is listed as a exception, 25-20 is also listed as a exception.

The earliest rule book I can find at the moment is March, 2006, and both are listed as exceptions in it.

The .56-.50 Spencer dates from 1860. Rimfire originally. I believe the rules say anything that 19th Century or a replica. No .300 Savage until 1920.
And it's not just the firearms that have to be 'period'. You do too. http://www.sassnet.com/Downloads/RO/...ndbook(15).pdf

Most clubs will let you get by with denim jeans (Levi's, Wranglers, etc.), a long-sleeved western shirt and boots. Lace-up western boots are also allowed. Two categories have more specific clothing requirements: Classic Cowboy and B Western.
