K Frame Snub Superiority

Let's see pics of your K frame snubs!!

Long gone from the S&W line up, these fighting revolvers served on the front line of civilian personal protection, and law enforcement back up and detective issue weapons for decades.

Picked up this '83 Model 10 not too long ago...

Let's see them!!!

My ideal of a snub is the Model 19, as shown here:

And, a slightly later model, fitted with Eagle Secret Service rosewood grips:

These are handy to have around.

Very nice model 19! I passed on a similar one (not as nice) for around $250 earlier in the year. That was dumb.

"K Frame Snub Superiority"

One shot. That was the difference between the K-frame snub and the J frame guns. With the same number of shots, many users preferred the Colt Detective Special or Cobra which was slimmer and lighter, even in the steel frame.

When it was a choice between the 5-shot I frame .38 S&W Terrier and the 6-shot M&P Snub in .38 Special, most folks went with the larger K frame - six shots and a more powerful cartridge.

S&Ws, while I love'em, are not the only 'superior' snubs.

It's funny. I always forget I have this one for some reason. I guess with a 3" barrel, I don't think of it as a "snub." Maybe it's because it's my wifes gun so I don't shoot it a lot.

Model 65-5 "Ladysmith."

It's a good shooter.

It was more than that for me. I have just never been able to warm up to a "J frame" at all. For some reason they have just never interested me.

It is a lot more than just the one shot advantage.

The leaf spring trigger has a very different feel from that of the coil spring trigger.

Leverage for manipulating the trigger is better on the K frame.

Recoil is softer on the K frame.

Those are not minor advantages. The only real advantages of the J frame are concealability and weight.

The J frames aren't bad shooters, but the K frames are more user friendly.

Two here, both 10-5s, one nickeled and one blued. Both deployed as car guns, for which purpose they are ideal.

My only short barreled K Frame; Model 66-1 with Hogue grips. It is a former issue PD gun so it has some electric pencil engraving on the frame, but still shoots well!

Model 19:

If 3" models count as "snubbies," here's a model 66:

A 65:

...and a Model 10:

Well, since you asked...

I'll play...

Model 66

Model 64

Cat-licked Model 19

I had 3" Model 65 I thought was ugly as sin, Does that count as a snub?

It's gone now, but I still have a picture of it.

Also own a J frame model 60 - my most of the time EDC...

It's still a Smith and still a 357 so I included it as well.

I also have a 44 Special 2" Taurus - not K frame - not allowed.

Hanging around here got me started on small revolvers. Used to shoot bottom feeders exclusively.

Zeb, I've got to say the 2" 15 may be the meanest looking gun Smith ever made.

I had a chance to grab a nice one at a good price a couple of years back, but I waffled and someone else got it.

Okay, here's my Model 15:

And my Model 19:

And, since we're counting three inch barrels, here's my Model 547:

I'll have to admit, though, that I carry my J-frames more than the K-frames. My favorite carry snubby, though, is my Colt Agent. Six shots, light weight, and a smooth trigger.

That's what I like about TFL. No matter how much caliber war noise and nonsense that goes on, I still learn something new quite often. I don't think I've ever seen a 547 - I had to go look it up. Very nice!

Got mostly J's in snubs but here's my 3, 2 inch K's. The nickel m15 is my favorite but the old pre m10 has a lot of carry time on it and is still belted ever once in a while. The m64 is a police trade in and a good shooter but has not been carried all that much.

Jim, for crying out loud! Stop showing off the 2" 15's! You and Zeb are going to drive me to make unwise financial decisions!

Very cool 547, BTW. The extraction system was truly unique on that.

Did they ever make a 2 inch stainless K frame 15? If so what was it's model number as I'd think that's a cool piece to add to my .38 snub collection!
