Replacing Plastic Saftey on Mossberg?

I understand there are replacements for the plastic safety switch on the Mossberg. Anyone know where to find one?

The shotgun I have is around 20 years old. The screw is not a one way screw. Here is another link for parts.

Mak - my Mossberg is about 15 years old but has the one way screw. I have no idea how to get it out except break the plastic safety and use some to grip and turn the screw.

I've ordered the metal safety and screw from Brownells.

I'm in the same boat. I got the metal part before i checked out the vandal proof screw. I hadn't considered breaking the safety to get a grip on it. You first, let me know how it goes

Per the question, I just would prefer the part be metal, given the Bad Things that could happen if it breaks.

Can you say, preventative maintenance? Or he is just like me and can't leave things alone.

I used a craftsmans screw out to get mine out.

GLK - you got it - preventative! Figured breaking it would be the way but thought I'd ask just in case.

Now, the stupid screw. Hate to buy something just to take one screw out.

Most of those plastic buttons last and last. Lets put it this way, I know alot of folks that have Mossy's or have owned Mossy's and a very (and I mean very) few have had button problems. With my luck, I just happened to be one of those folks.

On removing the one way screw,use a good flat tip screwdriver and push down on the screw real hard and turn counterclockwise to remove the one way screw,I replaced the plastic safety last week and it wasn't to hard to do,first disassemble the shotgun and be careful not to lose the small parts.

I just pushed down hard on the funky one-way screw and it backed out. After I put on the metal button, the "action" feel of the safety was much improved (smoother)... don't know why, but I'm glad that it feels better now. As for the funky screw head, what tha flock was Mossberg thinking??? Screwy, that's all!

At one point, people were replacing the safety, and not bothering to put the check-ball back in. The gun would go on safe, but normal handling could cause it to go back to fire. The Russian SKS rifles that came in during the 90s were also missing the safety spring, without it, the same thing happened.

Mossberg evidently felt that a gunsmith was the least liability risk to replace the piece.

By the way, I've had to replace two of the 70s-era buttons that failed. At that time, another vendor was offering the slide at $5.00 each.

If you don't feel like twisting the plastic piece to break it, a Dremel tool can be used to cut it away from the screw. Vise-grips will grasp the screw and turn it out. Replace with a Blue Loctited standard machine screw of the proper length.
