A couple of Hogs I've killed.

I've been hunting for just about all of my 71 years. Although I have to say not as avidly these days as in the past. Here's one of the first hogs I've killed. Probably around 1970. Shot him from about 10 yards in pretty thick palmetto. I was shooting an iron sighted model 94 Winchester with handloaded 150 grain Speer FN. I took the photo with a 35MM camera that was sporting a 90-200MM tele lens. I just set the timer and stuck the camera in a fork of a May Haw tree. I tripped the shutter. Hustled over and grabbed that ol' hog by the ears and smiled. I didn't know I had a palmetto fond right across my face until I developed the film.




This is the last hog I killed. That was 2 hunting seasons ago. This ol' boar hog came up over the hill just about dark. At first I didn't know what the heck he was. Then he turned toward my feeder and I could see it was a hog. I popped him at about 75 yards with a 160 grain 7MM Nosler Partition from my tang safety Ruger Model 77. The reason he looked so funny coming over the hill, his ears were almost gone. Just some little nubs.



I was just wondering what everyone's favorite hog gun is? Not trying to find out if it's the best for the job. Just wondering what your favorite is.

Nice lookin' boar! My favorite hog guns are my Marlin .30-30 carbine or my Mossberg 500 20 gauge with 18 inch barrel as both handle super good in dense cover.

hogdogs, One thing is for sure, if it was dogs that got his ears, he for sure won the battle. He was still very much a boar hog!

Favorite hog gun?

I've only taken one hog (so far) and I took it with my K-31. Weight was not an issue on that hunt, and I figured it would be more fun to use a rifle with some history. Also, it was my only rifle with a scout scope, and I wanted to try the scout scope concept. I really liked it.

Not everyone that releases hogs is going to barr (castrate) it. Or it may have gotten free from the dogs. He may well have tore up some huntin' dogs.

Nice hogs! Best of all guns? Just one? 30-06! It can just mess up sooo much meat on the short shots. Close up, in the palmettos, when 50 ft is a long shot, 12ga. slugs. Not much time for foolin' around.

I had a charging boar drop 10-12 ft. from me once. That's close enough for me. It soaked up a full mag of my brothers Marlin in .375 Mag. and taken two hits from my 30-06. I don't mess around with them in tight cover any more, 12ga. all the way in tight cover.

With a little space and shootin' eatin' pigs a .44 Mag works just fine.

I started out hunting pigs in heavy cover with dogs, and for that my favorite hands down was an old Marlin 30-30. Now I am hunting more open spaces like barley fields and Row crops so I needed a gun with a little more range. So I went back to the old standby a .270 win. with a nosler partition. Kills pig like they were struck by lightning.

I haven't hunted one with a gun yet but they sure are fun hunting with a compound bow. Had a freind that liked shooting them with a Contender 44 mag, did a great job.

I took a 200 lb sow a couple weeks ago near Sulfur Springs. She was fine dinnin'. A Win '94 dropped her on the run. She might have taken 2 steps after being shot. A peep topped 30/30 is a fantastic close range pig gitter.

My favorite gun for hogs, and anything else, is my 45/70. Love it the most. Every weekend, whether or not I get to shoot or hunt, it comes out of the safe and hangs out in the office and living room, with me.

We are getting wild hogs in Indiana now. Not so much up here where I'm at yet, but down south.

I've been out scouting for sign though, and the rifle I carry is an SKS with HP ammo. My backup is a 1911 pistol.

These are what I plan to use when they get more numerous north of Indianapolis.

Please allow me to answer the mans question. It is a Kane gun chap. The photo was taken a few days ago, I sold it for $30. They are good to protect your rifle. I have had them for BAR's, Win '94s, and the GG. I sold mine because I never liked the way that it made the hammer just a wee bit harder to cock with the lever.

Unfortunately, I hear that Kane has gone out of business.

I have found synthetic stocks, black, for the Marlin Guide Gune. I'm thinking that Santa will bring them to me.
