Speer Hot Cor Bullets

Hi All,

I'm a South African who does a lot of hunting, primarily with an 8x57 JS Mauser and a .30-06 Weatherby. I do all of my bushveld hunting (short range work in the 100 to 150 yard range) with the 8x57 and take longer shots with the 30-06. Next month I'm selling my 30-06 Weatherby (after a kudu hunt) and replacing it with an M03 Mauser in 30-06. Until my new 30-06 is licenced (and in this country this can take a LONG time), I'm left with the 8x57 do do everything.

I usually load 180 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip bullets in my 8x57 and have loaded them to go at 2550fps which is plenty fast for the bush. Because I now need to shoot at longer ranges with my 8x57, I purchased some 170 grain Speer Hot Core bullets. Has anyone out there loaded these specific bullets and if so, what speeds were you getting? These are semi spitzer bullets without boattails.

Regards

Dean

I loaded the 170 gr Speers in my 8X57. It's a very tough bullet, and performs well on heavily built game. I got the best results in my gun using IMR 4320 and WW760 pushing the bullet at just over 2700 fps. That was pretty much max loads.

Hi Dean, I am also in S.A, and hunt with a 3006

Hi Dean,
I am also in South Africa ( Cape Town)and use a Remington 700 in 3006
Previously I used Speer 180Gr Spitzers ( flat tails) with very good results, I still have some left.

At the moment I am using Hornady interlocks (also 180Gr'), which are also very good.

I load them with S365, and while I find that 49Gr' groups best (half an inch) 52Gr' gives them a flatter trajectory, while grouping 1.25", which for a hunting load is more than enough.

If you want you can call me on 0726200682.
Cheers'
Danny

I loaded some 8x57JS with IMR4895. It was a good, consistent bullet.

Not exactly the same thing, but my old persian mauser likes a 175 Sierra spitzer and IMR 4064. I get very good groups and 2700 fps out of its 29" barrel.
