Accurate Number 5, pros and cons?

Anybody have any feedback on Accurate Number 5? I plan on using it in .45ACP, light loads in .44 Mag and light loads in .357 Mag. It was reommended by a handloader as being a fairly clean burning powder. I am after a mild plinking load in the Magnums, and a standard load in the .45 ACP.

Well its cheap, not to bad on the clean burning, somewhat less good than Unique or Bullseye but it is cheap. I've used it for about 6 months now and I'd give it a strong 7, as it's got a good beat and you can dance to it! Plus it's cheap!

I've used a bunch of AA #5, as well as 2, 7, and 9. It shoots well but has a tendency to be a little dirty relative to some (but nothing like Unique or Bullseye). The one thing that it does better than any other powder I've used is meter well, especially in my Dillon 550B and before that, in my Hornady powder measure.

I've used a lot of #5, but almost all of it was in 9mm and 38 Super. Tried it with 185JHP's in 45ACP, and it gave good velocity with good accuracy. Don't really know how well it works in large capacity cases like the 357 & 44 Mags when loaded to moderate levels. May not burn real clean in that case - guess you're on your own there. I tried lots of different powders looking for light cast bullet 357 and 45 Colt loads; found Red Dot bulked up and gave consistent velocity and accuracy - much more so than most ball-type powders.

It DOES meter extremely well in my Dillon as well, and I think it's a great mid-weight bullet powder for .45ACP. I've used it in quite a few different bullet configurations between 200-230 grains.

I've also found it to be quite accurate.

Hello, all. I've had good luck with AA#5 loading 9mm cast bullets and Rainier plated slugs in 9mm. That's about all the experience with this powder that I can offer.

I've used #5 for 38, 45 and 40, it seems to be ok.
For 357 it was sort of weeney, WW296 is better for that purpose.

I went through several brands of powders trying to make the perfect round, and the winner for me was Accurate. The reason I like it so much..........small powder particles that fall through the powder measure the same every time. My 25yd test groups are over an inch tighter, and chrono speeds are very consistant. I'm very happy with accurate.

According to Accurate Arms brochure AA#5 was designed for the .45acp. All my best full power loads use it. I use alot of it. However, Its not very good for light target loads. I've never had very good results with it in other calibers.

Thanks for the feedback. All I can do I guess is give it a try. If it only works well for the ,45ACP, no problem as WW and Unique have served me well before for the others.
