185 Grain Golden Saber Loads

What are some good full power loads using w231. Ive consulted my reloading books and I am seeing 6.1 gr w231 as max. Well I worked up the load to 6.1 and I am only getting a 10 shot average of around 825 fps.

The funny thing is I also loaded some LSWC at 5.0 gr of 231 and the velocities
average 790 fps with a whole grain less powder.

The reloading books only indicate Jacketed in one and hornady xtp in the other. I have googled this and some people are using 6.8 gr which is .7 over max. Is there something odd about the Golden Sabers?

Gun= Springfield 1911 with 5" barrel

Thanks and confused,
Ed

Bad obturation on the jacketed rounds? Under-sized? Oversized barrel that is obturating with the softer lead bullets?

Slug the barrel.

Handloads.com shows 6.7 gr. for 1,050 fps for JHP.

http://reloadammo.com/45loads.htm shows 990 fps for 6.8 gr., so you should be able to gradually increase what you have been doing so far.

I just tried same loads with a buddys 1911 and the FPS were 30 fps faster and less deviation between shots. My barrel must be garbage. Thanks

Acording to my Lyman book you are at the max. I was loading some 200 gr LSWC at thier starting load with 800x, they were way under powered and shooting well low of POA. I checked the Hodgdaon site and the start load they listed was in the middle of what the Lyman book has listed.

I have not had my best results using Win231 with 185 or 230gr bullets.
my best loads for 185gr Golden Sabers are:

1. 10.0gr AA#5
2. 4.9gr IMR 700X
3. 6.0gr Red Dot

all of these have an OAL of 1.245" and shoot sub 2" groups at 15yds out of my Springer 1911A1 GI model.

Thank you for confirming that 6.1 was not max

I have some unique so I will give it a try

My Lyman and Lee also indicate that 6.1 is max also. But handloads.com suggest 6.7 grains and I have found other resources online which list much higher which I will not post. At 6.1 the recoil seemed very light. POI was very low and group was all over the place. My best load so far for accuracy was 200gr LSWC 231 5.0 790 fps. Since this is a new gun for me my load development is in its infancy.

I considered that a possibility. But I have 3 rifles and 4 pistols which register loads as expected. Plus A buddies 1911 with my loads had 30-40 fps increase in velocity, better accuracy, and standard deviation.

my best loads for 185gr Golden Sabers are:
I will try a slower powder. I have unique and 800x also.

Nothing wrong with getting a new barrel and keeping it handy, but don't throw this one out until you slug it and confirm that it's oversized.

I dropped my pistol off at wilson's and they are going to do a trigger job and put a match barrel in it. My trigger is an awful 7 lbs and was planning on having that done anyway so I just told them to fit a new barrel and bushing in it. When I get the old barrel back I am definatley going to slug it . Never slugged a barrel before but it will be a good experience . I bet your right about it being oversized.

Thanks,
Ed
