OAL for .308 in a Rem VTR using MK 168gr

Using a Hornady OAL guage w/ modified .308 case to find seating depth for a match king 168gr hpbt in my Remington 700 VTR in .308 cal. I get 2.99" when I use calipers to measure OAL. Too far out for the neck to even hold the bullet and well over 2.81 SAAMI max and Sierra manual for this bullet of 2.80
Clearly I cannot use this information to seat bullets.
I would like to hear comments on this situation and what the next move should be.

Seems to be Remington policy these days.
I'd seat them as long as the magazine would take.

Remingtons have always been throated REALLY, REALLY long...always. (all calibers, all models)

2.82"- 2.83" is about as long as you can fit in the magazine.

You can load them longer...but you will have to feed them by hand. (around 2.90"...but be sure to check for yourself that this is not touching the won't be, but its best to be sure.

I have the same issue with my remmy, as do most handloaders with remmy's. C.O.L. with 175gr Matchkings is around 2.960"
