Dating Handguns

I'm trying to date a couple of guns I inherited. I don't know much about guns. They are both S&W one is a 38 special #K 224xxx and I think a 45 #K275xxx. Thanks for any help.

1) Does the gun have an intertwined-"S&W" logo on it?
Yes on the handle.

2) Do you load and unload the gun by pressing a latch on the side, which makes the cylinder swing out to the left?
No

3) If not, I assume that you load and unload the gun by squeezing two buttons on the top rear of the gun,
No buttons there is a lever on top, in front of the trigger, you lift up that makes the barrel hinge down and cylinder hinge up.
I assume that it is still considered a top break.
Does it have a visible hammer? yes

4) If so, does it have a trigger guard (loop of metal around the trigger), and does the hammer move backwards by itself when the trigger is pulled? These two features should normally coincide.
Yes

OK, my explanation of how to open a top-break wasn't very accurate, but anyways...

It's a .32 Double Action 3rd Model, manufactured 1882-1883.
Thanks for all your help can you tell me what the gun might be worth? I will try to post pictures.

K224XXX = 1954
K275XXX = 1956 and "K" frames were only offered in 22LR thru 357 Magnum.

Hello,

My dad just passed his S&W down to me. Model 27-2, Serial N611XXX. Any information about this beauty would be much appreciated. Other than slight wear at the muzzle, she looks awesome and hasn't been fired much.

Thanks in advance,

I just acquired a Model 19-3 S/N 2K35186. I tried to find out the manufacture date of the piece so searched for serial number look up and it pointed me to this site. As I went through the posts I can see why, there are some very knowledgeable people on this site on the S&W models and serail numbers.

Could you guys kindly let me know what the manufacture date?

Is there a website I can look up additional information about the M19, like where it was old originally for example.

Thank you in advance for your help.

1979/80. The -2 was the last version to have the pinned barrel and recessed cylinder chambers (P&R) making it more desirable to collectors.

1971. You can find a lot of information about S&W's in general from the book The Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson. That's were we get the serial number to manuf. dates from. To find out the exact date your gun was shipped and were it shipped to you will have to pay for a letter/history look up from S&W which just increased to $50.
You can also go to this forum to learn more about S&W's:

S&W Serial Number

Hello, I just placed a MINT S&W Model 10, 2 in barrel on layaway. Looks like it has never been fired. The blueing is in perfect condition and the wooden grips still retain their shine.

Could you please tell me the age of the weapon.

S&W Model 10 2 in # 10D94XX

P.S. Also, could you please tell me the age of Model 18-1 # D9387XX
Thanks much!

Jonathan

10D94XX = 1982.
A model 18-1 would be "K"9387XX = 1969.

Depends on the letter prefix,
If "C" then 1964/65, if "D" then 1975.

Hi, I am trying to find some info for my Dad regarding the history and year of his Smith and Wesson revolver.

I am unable to find a model # anywhere.
I believe it's a 4" Barrel and says .38 S&W Special CTG.
It has a hand ejector button on the side.
The S/N is V136XXX

Thanks for any Help.
Ken

I just picked up Smith & Wesson Regulation Police CTG in .38s&w. The serial number is close to 23XXX. Just using the blanket serial number coverage for this shows it to be made from 1917-1940.
Can anyone else give me a little more information on this piece? I will send off for the S&W letter on November 1st when they allow applications again. Thanks!

V1 - V811119 were made from 1942 - 1945.
The 38 Special Victory model. The "V" prefix stood for Victory as these were made for the military during WWII. These are a early version of what went on to become the model 10 when S&W changed to model numbers in 1958.

Unfortunately, the book only shows SN 1 - 54474 from 1917 - 1940. You might be able to get a closer dob from S&W customer service over the phone for free. Cost nothing to try.

I can get a little more specific than laytonj1. Your gun was made in October or November of 1942. Wartime demand was so great that S&W shoved Victories out the door as fast as they could crank them out, making it very easy for collectors to correlate the build dates and serial numbers. BTW I own V92514; it has a 5" barrel and is chambered in .38/200 (.38S&W) for export to the U.K. under Lend-Lease.

FWIW your gun should have smooth walnut stocks, a lanyard loop on the butt, and a tiny "flaming bomb" U.S. military acceptance mark on the butt in front of the loop. Most Victories in this timeframe had "Black Magic" finish, which is a matte finish similar to parkerizing but more dark grey than black, and it tends to be thinner and more easily scratched. However, these guns were frequently refinished and fitted with aftermarket stocks when they were resold on the surplus market after the war.

Also look for other marks; Victories used by the U.S. Navy were frequently marked in a variety of ways, and these guns were also issued to guards at various wartime production factories, so they can also be found with markings for various U.S. corporations. However, guns marked "U.S.M.C." were reposrtedly used by the U.S. Maritime Commission, not the Marine Corps.

Another search...

Inherited my grandfather's revolver recently.

It's a heavy (N-frame?) S&W .357 w/a 6" barrel. I'm assuming a model 27. I think purchased in the 50s, but don't really know. Don't have the original box or manual.

SN: S108xxx
