The Benelli MR1 with a comfortech stock is a nice choice if you can't have a pistol grip, muzzle device and still want the ability to take M16 magazines. Its more money but I would buy one long before I bought a mini-14.

Someone would have to figure out a way to do away with the pistol grip, without using a thumbhole stock.
Don't know what California would call it, I wouldn't call it a thumbhole stock though.

Hmmm those Korean M1 Garands are starting to look more and more appealing now.

California will have to re write the laws to ban zig zag stocks now.

I think it would be cool to design a bolt action rifle that looks as close as it can to a scary AR just to **** them off.

I think you also need to define what the purpose of the replacement is for.

-Rifle using .223 or 7.62 rooskie rounds? A nice bolt action works.
-Varmint gun? lever action, M1 if you REALLY don't like varmints.
-HD? Shotgun.
-Tacticool mall operator equipment? Lee Enfield bolt action. Nothing says tacticool operator like a ninja operating a .303 in mad minute mode.

I'm thinking some type of rotating switch that takes a strait slot screw driver. You just give it a half turn and the mag falls out.
Such a rotating switch already exists, and it typically only takes a quarter-turn to operate; it's called a Dzus (pronounced like "Zeus") fastener. They're commonly used to attach body panels to aircraft and race cars. They're designed to be inherently and positively self-tightening, so a Dzus-type fastener on a magazine wouldn't necessarily loosen under recoil.

FWIW the takedown stock screw on my Winchester Model 69 has a rounded slot that accommodates a penny.

That's pretty nifty! Who makes that?

Here is an article on it. I don't think the design fixes the bullet button issue though

Carguychris.

That's where I got the idea. I have no problem playing tit for tat with the left. For every problem there is a solution. I say if they start throwing spike strips in front of our cars we just start buying runflat tires or bolt on a snow plow. It doesn't bother me one bit.

I guess I just cannot respond to the iniitial question of firearm replacement without suggesting the politians not the firearm be replaced. The last I knew this is a Constitutionally goverened country made up of the People. Don't replace the weapon, replace the person in office put there by the People who is legislating you into criminal status. If the majority want a ban and you cannot live with that then relocate where the People share your thoughts and vote accordingly. Or buy two AR's, ammo and a couple of long term storage tubes while you try to "throw the bum out".

I agree with WyoSmith and IBMikey. Let's keep our weapons in the configuration that they were made for, instead of trying to figure out how to comply with the latest draconian restrictions. As is often said, the second amendment isn't about hunting or target shooting!

IMO, it would be nice to move in the other direction and push to get select-fire legalized without a permit. Just sayin'.

Not in cali. It still has a removable mag and pistol grip.

Boomer

Edit. I forgot. In cali that adjustable stock must be fixed with a pin/bolt.

Maybe one of these if you pin the stock in place? It doesn't even have a hand-guard/barrel shroud.

It still has a mag that doesn't need a tool to remove and I think that's a pistol grip.

Even if it is not semi-auto? Do those laws even include pump action rifles?

What will replace the AR in AWB states

Bottom line. If my home state of WA pulls anything like CA or NY (very unlikely), I'm packing up and moving to Boise or Coeur d'Alene, ID.

The M-1 Garand doesn't have any plastic. Therefore, it could never be a substitute.
The SKS is held in low esteem by many or most AR owners. The SKS was the 'sleeper gun' during the recent panic.

These rifles can't be pimped up very easily, and even with prices for 7.62x39 ammo back down to .25/rd., the SKS won't have much appeal.
Why put money into extra .223 (etc) ammo when it could have gone into AR accessories?

Re: What will replace the AR in AWB states

I love my AR's and I am happy to live n a free state, however I see no reason to reinvent the wheel for those in ban states. There are a few options available depending on the state which I would not feel undergunned with. M1 Garand, Mini 14, SKS, 30-30 Lever Action, Remington Pump Action 223, to name a few. Not ideal but still serviceable and able to get the job done.

Isn't there a Remington pump rifle that uses AR magazines?
Remington 7615P (Police). Based on a Remington 870 20 gauge shotgun chambered in .223/5.56. Takes AR mags. Mine has ghost ring sight, I believe the rear sight is Wilson Combat and the front XS (possibly). Surprisingly accurate. No longer made. Originally retailed north of $700. I have noticed prices going up on these as might be expected. Mine was a police trade-in and $325 pre-hysteria.
