just a new 1858 owner
i ordered 4 1858 old army remingtons this week from cabala sporting goods.
$199.00 ea and free shipping. best buy on the net....period. my pard and I are gearing up for CAS shooting. i know uberti has a great reputation and these guns are pietta but from more than 160 reviews from cabela's site this maker posted 4.7 outa 5 stars. i'm very anxious to receive them, delivery date 20th dec. i checked dixie gun works site remembering that dixie always lists what ball to use for the guns they sell....451 was shown... anyone had better luck with another size? appreciate any advise offered our way about these firearms. thanx and merry christmas to all.... sewerman

Typically the Pietta Remington 58 replicas are happy with a .454-inch diameter soft lead balls. The .451-inch that DGW referenced is the actual bore diameter. Remember, you want to shear off a little lead ring when you ram the ball into the cylinder.
If you want it to shoot like an angel, it's got to have halos. |

"Just" another new 1858 owner? Don't sell yourself short! You and your pardner are gonna have an absolute kick in the pants!
I found that #10 CCI primers fit my Pietta 1858s best. They're a little tight on the 1860 Colts, so it just may be a matter of trying them out. Since black powder is so doggone hard to find around my parts, I shoot with Pyrodex P and I'm happy as a clam with it.

Congrats. The '58 are great revolvers. I love my Pietta. My wife bought it for me (from Cabela's) as a father's day gift. Cheapest way to shoot .45. Lots of FLASH BOOM >>grin<<
I run .454 lead balls in mine. I think my wife bought me both a .454 ball mold and a box of .454 swagged balls for Christmas. One of the boxes under the tree weighs about 2lbs and has a lot of rolly rattle to it Congrats on your pistols. I love mine. Next up is an 1860 or Dragoon...maybe a Walker if I can scrape the funds together |

Yep the 58 piettas are a hoot. I have 2. When I use the c&b cylinders, I use .457 soft lead round balls. Shaves off a bit bigger ring, but I seem to get better accuracy with them. Am I alone?

.454 balls are a good compromise. Small enough to not have to strain the loading lever loading them and big enough that they will not loosen under recoil.
You don't HAVE to load them to the max to get enjoyment out of them. |
