Age of my Great Grandfathers 38?
Serial # 141xxx, I think I remember my grandfather telling me that his dad was a cop... does that make sense for this gun? Any help is greatly appreciated. It is a S&W by the way

sflinky: Assuming it is a six shot K frame revolver in .38 Special, then it is a .38 Military & Police Model of 1905 2nd Change, made between 1906 & 1909. This gun were made prior to S&W introducing modern heat treating in 1920, so it should only be fired with standard velocity lead ammunition. It was designed for and the sights should be regulated for 158 grain lead round nose.

mrMONEYman: CEFxxxx dates your 65-6 to October 2000.
Your 28-2 dates to 1669-1972 (serial range N1 to N99999. |

wrp: The standard catalog of S&W serial number list only goes as high as CTAxxxx in October 2004, so your gun was made after that. Sorry I can't be more precise. The 36-10 was introduced in 2001 with the internal lock.
There was a 36-10 Texas Hold 'Em" blued special run in 2005 and a run of 225 36-10 nickel finish guns in 2006. There was also a run of blued clear-coat finish guns in 2004-2006. The above may help identify and date your gun. Hope this helps. |

Hi there,
I received from my father-in-law a S&W Model 27 .357mag with Serial #S1994XX. I think he got them from his father-in-law when he past away back in '83. Just looking for more info on it, like year on manufacture? Thanks to all for you help. God Bless Bill Last edited by shooter_from_show-me; August 11, 2009 at 12:20 PM. |

Hey I just bought an old Smith top-break for $100 and want to know the year of manufacture.
It's blue, 4", DA, 5 shot .38 SW. It appears to be a model 38 DA but has no model number. The top of the barrel reads: Smith & Wesson Springfield Mass USA PAT'D Jan 24, 65 July 11, 65 Aug 24, 69 REISSUE July 25, 71 May 11, 80 Jan 5, 82 Serial # 3023XX I think this means it's a 3rd issue? can anyone tell me? Any additional links, books, or info would be helpful. Thanks. |

M60 age
I picked up my first Smith & Wesson today, a solid M60 that appears to have been fired very little. A very nice gun was hiding under a nasty layer of grime.
The butt of the grip reads "ANN5XXX." Inside the crane arm there is a large "A5" and a smaller "289XX." I saw in one place that "ANN" denoted a limited edition gun. That would be cool, but there's nothing particularly noteworthy about this one--other than being a solid piece of worksmanship. No stamping or engraving or anything. Can anyone offer any insight? Thanks, Josh |

There is no mention of serial ANNxxxx in The Standard Catalog of S&W as a special serial range.
ANNxxxx should fall in the period November 1986 (ALCxxxx) & January 1986 (AHC1687). The model 60 was introduced in 1965 and continued in production until replaced by the model 60-3 in 1988. The 60-1 was a three inch barreled gun and the 60-3 was a special order for the NYCPD that was returned and sold through commercial channels. I would say that you have a normal model 60. Which is still a fine quality firearm. |

Thanks
More than happy to have a regular ol' 60. The LE thing didn't make sense because this thing couldn't look more stock.
Thanks for the help! Josh |
