Thank you for help, Just one more question. By the SN is, it has M629-1. What does the M mean? My buddy has a 629-4 and it doesn't have the M. Thank you very much.

As a prefix it means Model. Sometimes they use "MOD" sometimes just "M" and other times no prefix at all.
An exception would be the 581, 681, 586 and 686 no dash and -1 L frames. The ones that had the firing pin bushing recall completed were also stamped with a "M" (for modified) above or after the model number.

Hello, going through my late grandfather's belongings, I've found what I believe is a S&W Frontier Model double action revolver. The barrel engraving reads "SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD. MASS. U.S.A. PAT'D JAN. 17. & 24. 65. JULY 11. 65. AUG. 24. 69. JULY 25. 71. DEC. 2.79. MAY 11&25. 1880"
It's a 5-shot cylinder and appears to be .32 caliber
The Serial number is just 5 digits 953XX

Is there any way to get more info on this?
Thanks in advance for any help!

Frontiers are .44 Caliber
Sounds like you have a .32 Double Action.
The serial number is for a Fourth Model made from 1883-1909 but the last patent date of 1880 is for a Second Model. Barrels are interchangeable. Yours made before 1899 therefore a FFL Antique.

Serial numbers ran from C622700 in 1963 to C810532 in 1965. So, yours would likely be 1964.

Thank you Jim ,I thought I had either had the 642 on or close to me since sometime in 1996 . I started carrying j frames as back up or off-duty guns in 1989 and have had the 642 the longest and carried it the most of any other j frame and continue to in retirement .

Need help verifying this revolver

638-1

It is either BFY156X or 8FY156X

It was my grandfather's and it has the most ridiculous amounts of factory engraving I have ever seen.

Cool engraving! It’s BFY and would date to early 1991.

The book shows CBD in 1996 and CBN in 1997 so CBF would likely be 96.

It's an M&P made sometime in the early to mid 50's but before 57. C 38193 was made in 1948.
