Thanks Layton!

It's 4" from the face of the cylinder to the end of the barrel.

It is one sweet shooting gun also.

I haven't run anything but standard 38 special through it.

Thanks again.

Take good care of it but do shoot and have fun with it. It will handle any 38 special you can feed it.

And I know you didn't ask but the SCSW shows a value (5 year old prices) of $500 in very good to $750 in excellent with the 4" having an additional premium of 3 to 4 times that. It does take a big hit without the original grips though.

a friend just picked up a S&W CTG .38 special revolver.

I have a few questions:

1. what year? Serial # D113XXX

2. can a +P round be used?

3. What it might be worth.

4. + any other relevant info.

Thanks in advance for your help, it will be much appreciated.

I never thought I'd be asking this, but....

Would you be so kind as to share the date of a model 66 # 35K17XX

It has no "-#" and is pinned and recessed. I found where it could have been made between 1970 and 1977.

It appeared to have had a box of lead .38's shot through it, then put in a drawer until now. Never cleaned.

Almost fainted when I found it today.

Thank you!

1. SN"s ran from D90001 in 1969 to D330000 in 1970.
2. Not rated for it but won't hurt it either, if it's a steel frame model.
3. Depends on condition but around $300 to $400.
4. If it's a steel frame then it's a model 10. If aluminum frame them model 12.

Serial numbers ran from 25K0001 in 1978 to 56K9999 in 1979.
Your 66 no dash must be one of the last to sneak out.

Looking to buy a S&W 686

I'm looking to purchase a S&W 686 6 inch barrel 357 mag for $500. The owner doesn't know if it's a 686-5, 686-6 or what, nor does he know the age and all of its history. The serial number is CFT06XX. Any information you can provide would be greatly appreciated. This is an amazing thing you've been doing for S&W owners... we all are very thankful to you!

I lusted for one of those when they came out in 1987 (one year only).
The adjustable silhouette front sight and unfluted cylinder were so cool.
They were a 5000 gun run for Lew Horton distributing and were the original Classic Hunter.
The only ones I've seen on the used market lately have been pushing $1000.

CFT06XX would be 2003 and make it a 686-6 (MIM and internal lock).

Looking for DOB for S&W Mod 19

Hi...I'm new to this forum and hope that I'm posting this in the correct place.

I just picked up a Mod 19 Maine Warden Service 100th Anniversary Edition serial # ABK4593. I'm trying to get the date of manufacture, and if possible the number of units manufactured for this special edition.

Any help would be great! Thanks.

There were allot of special run commemoratives made over the years but the SCSW does not list all of them, including yours. But, the serial number dates to 1982.
You could call S&W customer service and they might be able to give you more info.

1980 - 86 Model 686

I was very fortunate to find a S&W model 686 6 inch barrel 357 mag in immaculate condition. It has been cared for very well, very nice stainless finish, cylinder swings and spins freely, is properly synchronized with the hammer, mechanisms are tight, trigger is sweet. This is the original model (no dashes), with serial number beginning with AHY. So that puts it somewhere between 1980 and 1986 from what I've read... could you help narrow it down to the specific year? Many thanks.

S & W 38 SP

I have acquired a handgun that I know nothing about and was hoping someone could help me figure out the model. This is what it says on the barrel:
38 S. & W. SPL

The serial number is: J26XXXX

It has the handle of the Model 10-5 but the body of the air weight Model 37, but I can't seem to find a model that has both of those features.

It's a model 36 (J frame). They came with round and square grip frames.
Serial numbers ran fron J250001 in 1975 to J370000 in 1976.
A model 36 is the all steel version of a model 37.
If you open the cylinder you will see the model number stamped on the frame cutout forward of the cylinder.

Yep, book only goes to 2004 at CHLXXXX.
You'll need to contact S&W customer service to get the DOB free over the phone.
