No, but I have a son flying missions as a Black Hawk door gunner in Afghanistan. Very grateful to the vets we have on this forum (and all others).

Same tradition with mine, a codicil in our family is if you wish to own and run the farm you have to of served in some branch of the military. This has been going on since the War of Northern Aggression. We have no children so for the first time the farm will have a Mistress as owner when I retire, My niece, USAF 1998 - 2002

US Navy 1955 - 1961, Served aboard a Destroyer for four of those years. Our squadron of four Destroyers had three Tours to the Mediterranean doing escort duty for aircraft Carriers in the sixth fleet.
In 1957 we went through the Panama canal and crossed the equator in June, and in November of that year we crossed the arctic circle escorting two Cruisers that were the first ships to be converted to have guided missiles aboard. Discharged in 1961 then was LEO for 30 yrs. Now retired but, would do it all over again if I was young enough. Last edited by GM2; October 25, 2012 at 02:29 AM. |

I decided that military life wasn't for me. I was on my own at 19 and opted to put myself through college instead. I had flirted with the idea of military service but life got in the way and it never happened. |

Tried my best to get into the military, really wanted to make a career out of it. Tried applying 5 times to the army, National Guard, and Marines. But the little BS knee injury I got 3 years ago that healed in just 2 weeks apparently crippled me for life and DQ'd me from any sort of military service.
IDK, still feels fine to me, but I guess the MEPS doctors know best . I guess my best bet now is to wait until we get dragged into another war and the military is desperate for some warm bodies. Was hoping to do army airborne. |

Either way I would have been happy to do pretty much anything else combat-related if airborne couldn't be done. But nooooo... |

Sounds like my right knee ... which I tore up in '59. The Army felt I was more than "good-to-go" in 1967 ... so just bide your time ... they may just need you some day.

I wanted to serve, but my physical condition at the age of 18-19 was terrible, that's not to mention flat feet and awful cardio endurance (I hav been running for years now and barely manage 4 miles in about 35 minutes! Abysmal!) by the time I was 21 I had lost about 50 pounds and regularly worked out. I was thinking about following several good friends into the Marine corps... Ended up married instead.
I planned on being a police officer as a career for as long as I can remember, all I ever wanted to do really. During my testing to get into the academy found out that I have some weird eye problem that causes me to fail the depth perception test even though I have 20/20... So that didn't happen either. Found all that our just after I got married, very hard to deal with at first, huge paradim shift. Missed opportunities. Most of my family has been Navy (father, two uncles) or national guard (three cousins, two uncles) and I have one uncle in the Marines. Plus most of my HS friends went into the army or marines. I'm damn proud to be associated with so many good men and women! |
