Winchester 748 powder

I recently found this at the store for about $7.00per lb cheaper than I've been buying Varget. I figured I would pick up a couple of lbs and see how it loads. It definitely runs much smoother through my RCBS Uniflow than the Varget. Zero hangups while charging a case. Overall, very easy to work with. The real test of it comes this weekend at the range.

How do you guys feel about this particular powder for loading .223?

748 has always been a standard ball powder for .223 and .308. It might not be the absolute best powder for a particular bullet, case, gun combination - but it'll give good results 95% of the time.

I liked 748 until Varget came out. With 150 Sierras, I could get over 2900 in the 308, but 748 gave big fireballs and report.

Very clean burn in the light bullets and .223

Hard to find lately but very good powder. I don't think any powder beats Varget as far as all-round use though. Varget is very accurate in many weapons and cals. The speer manual says to use magnum primers when loading this 748 powder. I like the Wolf small rifle Mag. primers. But I have done/tried everything primer wise for accuracy and ended up with Wolf.

Any 40 grain plastic tip bullet
28+ / - grains of 748
Wolf SRM primers
07 LC Brass

less than min. of angle to 200 yards with calm winds.

I use it as my main powder for .223 with 55gr FMJ bullets. Meters well, produces very accurate results.

IIRC, Varget is better than 748 for certain .223 applications, such as heavier bullets, not so much for lighter ones.
