5.56/.223
I know all about the differences between the 2 cartridges, and why you shouldn't shoot 5.56 rounds in a weopon chambered for .223.
What I don't get is how ammo and weopons are advertised. I know many people consider them the same. (They aren't) I see adds for .223 ammo and the box in the picture has 5.56 on the side! ??? Do they just say ".223" so people don't get confused? How many rifles chambered in ".223" can actually safely chamber 5.56, but you wouldn't know it? If the same logic applied as in the ammo. If you look through guns catalouges, there are weopons displayed in both chamberings, though more in .223. I guess I would prefer one chambered in 5.56 so I could have the option of using surplus ammo. I guess the difference would be in the rifling used to facilitate heaver/lighter bullets for competition purposes. Why do they substitute or misrepresent this caliber, or do they?

I've wondered the same thing. Midway's replacement AR barrels from various manufacturers all seem to say ".223/5.56mm" in the descriptions.

Hoytinak, I think he's wondering why the ammo and parts manufacturers DON'T seem to know this. Or rather, the people designing the packaging and literature don't seem to know this, since they treat .223Rem and 5.56mm as interchangeable terms.

And if it wasn't already confusing enough which one do you shoot in the 223 Wylde chamber.

its very confusing though probably find the best answers on ar15.com
some barrels are chambered 5.56 some are 223 rem. lots of chambering options and offerings. competition from reamer or barrel manufactures. some barrels marked 223rem/5.56 are reamed to be ok with both. if in doubt get some gages and check for yourself.

The .223 Wylde is suppose to be kinda in-between SAAMI and MIL-SPEC so it allows you to use in either 5.56/.223 chamber and give you almost the accuracy of a real SAAMI when using the good ammo but also allow you to use cheap surplus ball ammo safely.

my understanding is that 5.56 is loaded to a higher pressure than .223, so if it is chambered for .223 only, you should not shoot 5.56. If chambered to 5.56 you can shoot either.

SlotRacer- That is correct.
The other post's confirm what I always thought was an advertising quirk, until now I wasn't sure if I was the only person puzzled by this, or if I was missing something painfuly obvious.
