I just bought a Magnum Research Desert Eagle .50AE. The only ammo I found for it was the Speer 325 grain JHP.
1. Does anybody else manufacture bullets for the .50AE? 2. What's a good powder for this caliber? W296? 3. Anything I should be aware of when loading this caliber? [This message has been edited by ArmySon (edited October 22, 2000).] |

I had a Grizzly in 50 AE. Since that isn't a gas operated gun I could load cast bullets in it. Worked just fine. Of course with your pistol that isn't a possibility.
One oddity about this cartridge. It develops such pressure that the spent cases are little missles. I sometimes had to recover spent brass by pulling them out of the woodwork at the shooting bench. They had such velocity that they impalled themselves on whatever they hit. Needless to say you don't want anyone standing all that near you when you fire this thing! Then there was the noise. Really something! |

Here's a copy of a previous post of mine. Concerning my handloading of my Desert Eagle 50 A.E..
Speer 325gr JHP\31.0 GR H110\CCI Magnum Large Pistol Primers\various 50 A.E. cases.\overall length (I set the caliper at 1.61 in, and the loaded round must pass through this with ease, but with not to much of a gap. If I feel there is too much of a gap I disqualify it). As a note: I remove the barrel, and drop the loaded round down the chamber. Then tip the barrel up side down. If the loaded cartridge falls out of the chamber easily it passes. If it doesn't, or if the loaded cartridge gets stuck when going in it is disqualified. As always you should be cautious of any hand loads given on any gun forum. Hope this helps! |

Lotsa folks make .50 caliber bullets for hand loading.
Inexpensive, copper plated bullets can be had from Berry's Bullets ( I just saw them last night ), or possibly from Rainier bullets (haven't verified this). Copper-plated does not equal Jacketed, though. Beware when loading. You have to treat it like a hybrid, something in-between jacketed and lead. Go 10% lighter loads than the Jacketed loads and you will be fine, according to what I have heard so far. Rainier's website has more info on loading plated bullets. Never shot a .50AE... would like to sometime though. I want a Freedom Arms or Magnum Research BFR in .50AE. |
