Garand range report
A few years back the Civilian Marksmanship Program placed a few hundred of the "6.0 million", Garands up for sale.
These were the "Last of the Mohicans", as far as Garand production was concerned and most were originally made up as National Match rifles. The moniker "6.0 million Garand" refers to the serial number, which is anything over 6,xxx,xxx and denotes the very last production Garands.. I was able to glom two of them Both of them, unfortunately, came with brand new wood. Fortunately they also came with National Match barrels that are like new. One is a 3-53 LMR NM barrel and the other a 3-52 SA NM barrel. I made a quick trip to the range this afternoon and fired one of the "6 million" Garands. I was rushed, so I only had time to zero the rifle with some LC ammo and then switched to the Hornady M1 match ammo. Five rounds @ 100 yards... Right around 2 MOA |

2 MOA. No way I can shoot that tight of a group with mine. 4-5 MOA for me and my eyes.

Sweet!!!!! I have a 1944 S/A 2,xxx,xxx M1 Garand Service Grade that I bought from the CMP back in 2003. Love shooting that rifle!!!
My rifle will fall into the 2-3" grouping......close to 3" on average depending on how I'm shooting that day. I shoot either 150 or 168 grain FMJ over IMR-4895.

LMR
You don't mention WHICH rifle you took to the range!
But, the LMR barrels are recognized as great shooters. I purchased a SA marked Garand quite a few years back in the late 1980's when M1's were surfacing in the commercial market. I chose that particular rifle 'cause it had a NM operating rod. Later, as I learned more about Garands, I discovered the barrel was an LMR rebarrel. My LMR shooter will not pass the brass ring test at the muzzle, and I suspect it would gauge terribly, at the muzzle and the throat, but the rifle does not know it and still groups nicely!!!!! I'll be watching for follow up posts to see which of your NM Garands shoots best! |

Nothing quite like shooting an M1, I also bought mine from CMP years ago and love it. They really are works of art. Congrats on your 2 6+ rifles.
