410 ammo

I took apart several Federal Premium Gold Medal #9 Target Load 410 shells the other day and found that the shot appeared to be 2 different sizes and colors; the smaller (0.076) was bright and the larger (0.084) was dull.

Has anyone come across this and is there a specific purpose for same?

I know why I wouldn....would, but why do you?

There are allowable tolerances in shot production of +/- 1/2 size up or down. Perhaps some were left over from a previous production run of a different lot. Taking them apart, especially expensive GMs seems wasteful to me. I'd rather shoot them.....

Neither of those dimensions are standard. .085" is #8.5. .079" is #9 shot. Mind you, 1 thou isn't a lot.
