1100 for coyote hunting?

I'm looking to use my 1100 Tactical for coyote hunting and was wondering what choke works best for longer ranges and what load I should use since I can only use 2 3/4 for it? Thanks for your help!!!

Well, that's a loaded question that will only be solved by range time and a patterning board.

In theory the tighter the choke the denser the pattern at longer ranges. In reality once you get above a certain shot size you get diminishing returns and can actually get some blown patterns from deformed over-choked pellets.

Most people seem to use the larger birdshot sizes or smaller buckshot sizes for coyotes. There are also dedicated coyote loads out there today, but I'm not sure that any are available in 2 3/4". If not, I'd start with some "T" size non-steel shot (hevi-shot maybe?)or #4 buckshot with a choke of appropriate constriction and go from there.

Carlson's makes a "dead coyote" choke tube that you may want to try. I've read good reports on it but never used one myself. All of my coyote shotgunning has been done while deer driving and the yote's were trying to sneak through. In those cases I was using 00 and a mod choke but the range was only about 35-40 yds max.

You'll need to pattern test your gun/choke/load combination at the ranges you expect to shoot though.

You might want to look into Federal's offerings in their Flitecontrol line of 00buck. I get some really dense patterns with the stuff and I'd think it'd be the bee's knees on Coyote...

Federal Flite Control loads are the bees knees and are what I've been using for deer hunting lately. Nice patterns.......

I've used the 2 3/4" and 3" shells for hunting and they work great. I have a zombie apocalypse stash of the 2 3/4" ones in the ammo closet too .

I was in Louis Awerbuck's class a couple months ago and when we were patterning our 00buck loads, he thought I was using slugs at 15 yds...

How much money do you have?

Hevi-Shot Dead Coyote comes in 2.75"

They claim knockdown patterns at 70 yards.

I wasn't sure if the Dead Coyote loads did or not, but your question is a good one. Them things are spendy!!

1100

A friend of mine is an avid coyote hunter/trapper. When hunting, he uses an 11-87 and an extra full choke. Shot size - not 100% sure - #4 birdshot IIRC.
Shots, as I understand it, are generally short range - under 40 yards..

those hevi-shots seem interesting...i might try a box of them out and see what they are like. I'm thinking about getting a wingmaster hd choke since my 1100 only has a 22 inch barrel. How would 00 Buck work out of that?

The choke matters more than the barrel length. What you are going to be concerned with is the pattern that your load produces. That is way more dependent on the choke than whether you barrel is 22" or 24" or 26"; they all open at the same rate.

I would try with just a full choke and pattern it. If that doesn't work get a .223

A full choke with lead BB's will work well out to 40 yards. Beyond that it is iffy. With 00 buck you only have 9 pellets in the 2 3/4'' shell.

I think that's why more people choose T or #4 size buckshot as it gives them the best balance between pellet weight/retained energy and pellet count.

Again, I don't do much dedicated coyote hunting. I seem to kill enough of them during deer season...............

I'll try a few different things and see what patterns well out to 50 yards or more. Thats the only way I'll know for sure. Trial and error
