Bayonet Charge.
I am trying to come up with a shooting game for my birthday blastfest next year. It needs to be safe but as much fun as possible. The main scenario has a row of targets at 60yds but what hangs me up is the bayonet charge part. I think running it side by side would make it 10x as neat but is where the safety issues come in. After taking out the row of enemies in the trench the shooter would run 10-20yds shooting targets along the way then bayonet their last target. What say the RSO's out there? Single shooter and timer or side by side for the full battlefield experience?

It all depends on the skills of the participants.
And how much you like your Birthday party guests. Run 'n gun, especially in herds, can be downright dangerous, if the people involved aren't used to it. Unless you are sure of the abilities of your guests, and want them around for future get togethers, doing it one at a time would probably be better. Or If there's enough range room, you can run a very small number at a time, in slightly different directions, to lessen the risks. Like maybe three at a time, one straight on, one slightly to the right, and one the same to the left, all clear of one another.

Safety First, cool and neat last. Single runners, timed event plus scores.

Yeah. A couple of my friends are IDPA RSO's so running it like a standard stage will be no problem. Now I need about 100yds of cable for the zip line. Between these the happy face shoot, find the Tannerite in the Christmas forest and maybe adding a long range dueling tree should keep things lively. I think if you search my name and birthday blastfest on YouTube you will get an idea how we cut firewood around here.

I'm always trying to find ways to shoot my vintage rifles. Last year I shot a 3 gun match and chose my '98 Krag for a rifle and USGI (as issued) M1911.
So besides the rifle, I show up to the match with some period gear. Pre-WWI Campaign hat, pre-WWI belt, w/Krag Bayonet, and bandolier for the 30-40 ammo. One stage required you to stand about 10 feet from the target, with it at your back. On the three targets there are balloons hidden. When the shop timer went off you had to turn pop the three balloons, then engage 6 paper targets down range, with two hits each. You can get 6 rounds in the Magazine in the Krag, so it required on reload to engage the paper targets, but you also had to get the three balloons. That would require another reload. To reload the Kraq you throw loose rounds in the hopper on the side of the rifle, which is a bit slower then changing mags in an AR, not to mention, with a AR you wouldn't have to reload on this stage, but I'm not shooting an AR, I'm shooting a Krag. So I decided to engage the balloons with the bayonet, they shoot the paper targets using only one reload. No I didn't win but I had a heck of a lot of fun. Loading the Krag

Oh man, that looks like a lotta fun! I LOVE me some Krags!!! I really like the hopper-fed system. It gives the gun a distinct look, and while I've never shot a Krag I bet it's really neat to be able to top off the magazine with loose cartridges.
I sometimes do bayonet charges with this sweet baby: It's my Chinese Type 56 Carbine, equipped with spike bayonet. Nasty little thing that spike! Well known for creating a self-supporting, cross-shaped wound channel that is very deadly and promotes rapid hemorrhaging. Bayonets are fun! |

"...Run 'n gun, especially in herds, can be downright dangerous..." And far more unsafe when you add a bayonet. Even if there's only one shooter at a time, an untrained guy with a fixed bayonet is highly unsafe.

Single shooter for safety.
If you do have two shooters, all targets must be shot (bullets expended, weapons empty) before they may charge. They must look at each other and agree that the foe is waning and that the charge would commence. Make them stay in their own safety lane during the charge. It would not do to have one buddy impale another.
