TC white mountain carbine

Hi all, I'm new to black powder rifles and was wondering what kind of loads does everyone use in theirs. I just picked up this carbine for $100 and it has never been fired. Been searching but info is limited. If I remove the wedge does it come apart like my 1851 colt does? Does it have a breech plug to aid in cleaning? any info will be appreciated.

Yes, just remove the wedge & the barrel comes rite off
Very cool little rifles & loads of fun to shoot - I just got a Lymans Great Plans Rifle in 54cal so i sold the TC to a freind for a Christmas present for his son I only shoot RB's so i can't give ya any loads cause the twist in them really are made fer the modern boolits 'n sabots & such Nuther (main) reason i got the GPR with the 32" barrell with a 1:60 twist Have fun----

I think the twist on those is 1:28 or therabouts. Too fast for round balls. Maxi Balls, Lee Reals or any of the other conicals with 80-90 grs. of powder should work pretty good. May have to play with powder charges to get it to shoot it's best.

The twist on my .54 WMC is 1 in 48", a compromise that shoots either prbs or conicals. However, with the 21" barrel you can't take advantage of the conical's range superiority, so it's really a prb gun.

I shoot 80 gr ffg real black, .530 rb with 0.018" patch.

The gun has a hooked breach and the barrel is easily removed for cleaning once the wedge is removed - just lift from the muzzle end. The breach plug is not removable.

My white mountain carbine shot very well with patched rb using 30 gr of fffg goex blackpowder .
I took my first 2 deer with blackpowder with it,using 80 grains of fffg and a hornandy xtp 240 gr 44cal sabot.Powerful enough for woods hunting and not alot of recoil. If I remember correctly,it chrono'ed about 1500 fps,but it has been a few years.

You learn something every day. When Hoss got his I did some checking around and I thought all the WMC's were fast twist.

When I can free up some time to get back into the workshop I'll double check that, but I usually test the twist a number of times to be sure of my result. I recall being a bit surprised at 1 in 48 as I thought it was supposed to be faster. Maybe I didn't retest this one.

I was thinking mine was 1-28 or 1-38 twist.
