Anyone know a good 8Mauser Load?

Does anyone know how to load an 8MM Mauser Cartridge, with a Soft point hunting bullet that will duplicate the trajectory of the military cartridges that were used with the 98k Mauser?

I haven't loaded 8 mm for some time, but I did load a batch for my brother with Speer 150 grain spitzer SP over IMR 4064. These were mid-range loads, and I never chronographed them, but they were accurate in an old 98. Speer lists this load in their current edition:
Start 47.0 2,695 fps
Max 51.0 2,915 fps
They were shooting a 98 with a 24" barrel. Frankly, that max looks pretty stiff. Definitely work up slowly.

I have a load that I've been using that works well enough, but I don't know if it meets this standard:
Quote:

...so I didn't bother to share it. Furthermore, I don't have a chrono, so I don't know what speed it's moving at, so you can't even plug it in to a ballistic calculator to predict it's path.

If you just want the load, I'm using the Remington 185 gr Core-Lokt PSP (old tech bullet!) and 42.0gr of H4895 powder, with the bullet loaded to it's cannelure and lightly crimped. In my old Mauser, it gives me about 1.5" at 100 yards, which is as good/better than I might have expected.

Most recently, I had fun re-forming old milsurp .30-06 brass in to 8mm Mauser and made my ammo with those pieces. Not because I had to, but because I learned how easy it was and wanted to try it myself. It was fun and worked just as well as factory brass.

Each rifle works differently. What works well in one, dosnt in another. Bullet and powder mfg's make manuels to give you starting points and maximum. Drop by your local supplier and they will usually have a flyer or 2 from the powder companys that they will give to you.

If those flyers do not list your 8mm, then you will have to purchace some manuels which is of course the best idea.

This is the best advice that I can give you.

Thanks, The reason I was wanting to match the original 8 Mauser loads is that I want to hunt with the rifle in its original condition, and want the Point of impact to match the ladder sights the rifle is wearing.

For hunting I use 200 gr partitions over 50 grains of Imr 4350. 2" groups at 100 with open sights. Took a deer at 75yds and an elk at 150yds last year. 4064 works well to.

My experience with surplus Mausers has been that they usually print high at 100 yards. I've had some print as much as 9" high with the back sight on its lowest setting. With a slightly taller front sight and the Sierra 175 gr. loads worked up with IMR 4064, I've gotten a very good combination of velocity and accuracy and the groups print where they're supposed to.

The cheapest jacketed bullet out there right now is the Rem 185grsp. The problem is virtually no load data for that wt of bullet. If you are going to use this bullet let me know. I will check my notes and get back to you.

Don't know what the current military loads for the 8mm are today, but I do know what my father was shooting back in the 50's with his....said he had to "arc them like hell to make a hit at 100yds"...my uncle loaded sierra 150gr with 46 gr of IMR 4064 and those seemed to match quite well with the ramp sights. He used that for the next 30 years until he went to Rem 760 in 270....scoped to account for weakening eyesight... I saw him make some very impressive shots with that 98' on running deer over the years..still have it....

I've loaded it, but never got a very accurate load worked up. I was using IMR 4064 and sierra 150s.

I have only one 8mm Mauser pet load. It is- 180 gn Nosler B.T. over 50 gn IMR 4064, Win Lg rifle primer and Win. cases . I was considering re-barrelling my rifle until i tried this load out. My 8mm is in a scout configuration though.I have also gotten good results with 48 gn of Varget and the above mentioned bullet. The IMR load is a max load, so if you use it , reduce it and work up carefully.

I have got 220 gr Sierras to go 2665 fps over a chronograph with a 1903 Turkish Mauser.
That is with IMR4895
That really kicks.

Clark,

A 220 Grain 32 Calliber Bullet, at 2600 feet per second is pretty serious medicine for big game.
