mounting scope

Another dumb question, but in all fairness to myself, I could have combined this with original dumb question on locktite to make one really long dumb question!

I am tightening the rings to my bushnell red dot. Do I tighten them to the point that they touch? is it possible to tighten the rings to the point I damage the scope?

Tighten the rings until they are snug, then 1/2 turn more. And yes, it is possible to tighten the rings to the point they will damage the scope. Scope tubes are made of aluminum, which is soft and can be easily squeezed to the point it leaves a depression in the scope tube.

Most of what I have read recommends 25 in-lbs. Warne has a torx head driver with a built in 25 in-lbs max.
I have heard of many "techniques", but unfortunately, many of them result in over-enthusiastic exertion, which leads to threads stripping out. Not sure that I have ever seen a scope body crush.
Now that ain't saying it don't happen, cause when it comes to rifle and pistol scopes, I have seen some weird things done.

Just read an old issue of American Rifleman on scope mounting. The author stated a average size man (using the right size screwdriver) typicaly exerts between 17-20 lbs. using only his thumb and first two fingers. All that is needed on scope rings.

Hey guys that torque setting should be 25 in/lbs.
